everytime I shift from 1st to 2nd, or from 3rd to 2nd, it alllllways grinds (started today)
none of the other gears have this problem.

What could it possibly be, how would I posibly fix it, and how much is it gonna cost me. This might be the straw that breaks the camel right here :(

The only way to get rid of this grind, is to sell the car.... Problem solved. :D

Im kidding!

worn fluid doesnt perform as well as new fluid. mtf has something called friction modifiers and i believe that is what helps the synchro do an even better job of bringing things to the same speed so you can shift gears vs old worn fluid. my 3rd gear stopped grinding after i changed my old fluid with pennzoil synchromesh. and all my shifts got smoother and less notchiness in cold weather. changing with pennzoil synchromesh fixed a problem with my grind in 3rd.

Yeah I would stay away from that pennzoil ****. I doubt it'll work as efficiently as Honda mtf. I have heard so much bad **** about pennzoil over the years from all kinds of oil lab technicians. But then again, what do they know.

wawa--However, I would still not change to pennzoil. Change your fluid, it will help the issue. Do you drive your car hard(ish)? If you are always "shoving" your car into gear when racing around, then that is obviously a good place to start(when finding a cause). You may not be able to do that any longer if you want to keep that trans for another 30-50k kilometers.

The fluid can make the difference even for a single gear. When I first did my swap all I had on hand at the shop was 10w30 oil and I used that, seemed fine at first but once the cold weather came I could see a huge difference. 1st-2nd shift felt like it wanted to grind on a brand new tranny! Once I switched to Honda MTF, smooth but doesn't feel quite as nice as it could, I may have to try this synchromesh when I do a drain and refill.

AMSOIL SYNCHROMESH MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID. This will help alot. I also installed a Password JDM magnetic tranny plug when I drained and refilled with the AMSOIL. You wont regret either of these "mods".

Hey dontbuyprelude, I recently changed my MTF for the Honda MTF sold here in Quebec (Not the gray bottle with the white cap, but some people said that what I bought was the same thing.) I was experiencing shifting issues in cold weather before the oil change and now it just seems worse (or maybe it's just getting colder outside?) But I would like to try the Pennzoil Synchromesh. Is there a Friction Modified version of this one like the GM Synchromesh? The one you used to fix your problems was the ''Regular'' Pennzoil Synchromesh right ?

"Regular" Pennzoil Syncromesh and Friction Modified GM syncromesh are about the same.

I shelled out $50 for the Friction Modified GM syncromesh and it didn't help any more than the Pennzoil Syncromesh I used. For $7 a quart use the Pennzoil syncromesh.

My axle seal drips here and there so when it gets notchy I change the fluid

Allright, after maybe 500kms after the Pennzoil Synchromesh oil change, I can confirm that there are a lot less grinding when I shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. I still have a hard time getting the first speed in at a stop, but now if I re-clutch the gear goes in normally, which was not the case with the Honda MTF. I am very happy I changed the fluid because now I don't feel like I am destroying my gearbox.

My advice : If you don't have any problems with Honda MTF, stick with it. If you experience grinding when the car is cold in winter, go with Pennzoil Synchromesh, there might be less grinding.

Using that stuff is like putting a band aid on it, your synchro for that gear is shot and it will only come back. A transmission rebuild should be the only thing you should be doing right now.

Also for anyone in the future who reads this thread, you waste your money with a magnetic drain plug, there is a magnet in the trans already to catch metal shavings.

No, there is only a friction modified version that some people like, and some others haven't seen any difference compared to the regular version. In my case, I had horrible grinding from first to second gear specially during cold mornings, when the transmission was cold. But even when the car was fully warmed up, some grinding still occured with the honda MTF. If you don't have any problems, stick with the honda MTF, bt i you have some grinding, I noticed a big difference with Pennzoil synchromesh (regular version in my case) It reduced a lot the grinding in cold weather and now there aren't any ( or very little ) grinds...

I'm not a professionnal, I don't know what will be the long term effects, but at least now it doesn't grind... so it's your choice... !

^There is a TSB on the 5th gear grind for all Prelude's and Accords between 92-02 which was caused by a misalignment of the shift fork. The solution was to replace the fork, sleeve set and gear for 5th but all Prelude's and Accords of those years are out of warranty at this point and I think they only did it if it were reported at a low mileage as 5th can easily be ruined by the owner with lack of maintenance.
