Raspy Exhaust

Whatup, I just got my exhaust this weekend, I got the Arospeed immatation of the 5Zigen Fireball muffler, and had custom 2.5 inch piping done cat back. When I left the muffler shop I loved how it sounded, its almost silent at idle, and at low RPMs its a deep hum, which made me really happy, however, if I am over like 4500 RPMs, at the tops of first of second gear (not driving it hard) it gets really raspy sounding just for a few seconds at the top of the gear. It almost sounds like a rattle, so I took it right back to the shop and said, its ratteling, the guy put it on the lift and said that it wasn't touching anything for it to be ratteling. So I said ok and left. I have the SS tranny, Im not sure if that matters or not-- but I have heard that exhaust sounds change over time, I am just curious as to what this raspy rattle is, and what I can do about it... I have a feeling all I am going to be told is 'you should have bought a name brand muffler' I hope not.

A friend said I should get a cherry bomb resonator put on and that it would help-- but I dont know-- any suggestions as to what I should do about this?

having a SS has nothing to do with the exhaust. as san marino quoted, you get what you pay for. :)

So having an arospeed muffler that looks JUST like the fireball inside and out would cause this? Why? What are the physical differences in the two that would make one sound raspy at times and the other not?

Because dude, its an aerospeed muffler. Its ****ty quality, unlike the 5Zigen model. Just get a full catback and you will not regret it. Dont disgrace the prelude by driving around town pissing everybody off with a ****ty sounding exhaust.

dam, dont be so hard on the guy..w0rdie, the raspy sound that you hear from your exhaust is, like everyone said, most likely coming from your aerospeed muffler. did the muffler shop you took your car to do a good job? how about the piping? you may want to try and buy a different muffler. tsuedo mufflers are pretty cheap and they look nice, just like a TRM. also, N1 mufflers are good too. its up to you, a full exhaust system, with mandrel bent piping is your best bet in having a great sounding and quality exhaust. greddy, tanabe, apexi, rs*r, etc. 5zigen is nice too and their full catback systems aren't that expensive at all. its all up to you.

don't waste your money on that crap. just get a real cat back and you'll be happy. I saw a civic the other day that sound like a remote control airplane ... some chick. People were like wtf is wrong with that car?

Ok ok, So what catback system should I get, I want it to look good, and not be too loud, but sound deep, and also not cost a ton -=(

Where should I look for them, what are some good sites with a big varity and low prices?

Thanks for the help...

inexpensive and nice would probably be a greddy evo, apexi n1 or what people on this board really like ... thermal. Search for thermal exhaust and you'll see a bunch on it. I would go with the evo or N1 though ... only problem with them is that I think they're pretty deep and loud.

I'll say Thermal R&D too, should be well under $500 for a full stainless steel catback. But before that, if you say it really sounds like something is rattling, check the heat sheilds. They can get bumped loose during an exhaust install and then rattle harmonically at certain engine frequencies. Also it takes a little while for the muffler to "burn in" and so it might mellow a bit after a few hundred miles.

That has part is what I wanted to hear.. -=)

I am going to keep my fingers crossed that it gets 'burned in' I paid 130 for the muffler, and around 120 for the piping and welding, thats 250, half the cost of the 'cheap' catback systems, and even though I don't like the raspy sound at the tops of the gears, I don't know if I dislike it enough to spend ANOTHER 500$ on getting a new system.

I also heard that putting a Cherry Bomb resonator on it wouldn't hurt performance, and would tone it down a bit-- which would be good for me, and they are only like 35$ or so... so if anyone has any advice on that, please share because that is a much cheaper option for me. I am trying to spend the money I have on other mods, not redoing the ones I already have.

thanks a lot to everyone, other than those would said 'ITS A POS BLAH BLAH' :)

Well man, i mean we arent lying when we say you get what you pay for. Look dude, just get a full catback system, and it will be 500 times better, trust me. Go get the mugen twinloop. Its expensive as hell, but the best sounding exhaust for a prelude by far. It was the first mod on my car :D

Ahh... then what can I do to tone down the raspyness of my exhaust?????
Get a new, better quality, catback exhaust. Or at least axleback like someone else said.:bigthumb:

Ok Ok, Im about to call the shop where I got the arospeed and tell him that im not happy with the muffler, depnding on how cool he is about it all I may try another style arospeed, or I may just get my money back... but it all depends on how cool he is about it.

wish me luck...
