puzzled... Clock/Radio fuse keeps burning out? Any ideas why?

Hi guys,

If anyone could help me with this problem, I'd really appreciate it.

The clock display went dead after I installed an amp in my trunk. I found that the 7.5A clock/radio fuse was blown. So I went and bought new fuses, but as soon as I touch the fuse to the contacts in the fuse box, the fuse blows again.

I can't figure out why this would be happening.

- My amp is located in the trunk, fed by 4AWG wire from positive battery terminal to ground in the trunk.

- My head unit is an Alpine requiring a direct connection to the battery, so I have a lead going to the positive battery terminal (temporarily, will eventually tap 4AWG positive going to amp) and a ground attached somewhere inside the dash. The h/u was installed prior to my clock problem, and the clock worked fine.

- I also ran 3 pairs of RCA terminals from the h/u to the amp in trunk. I don't see how this could have affected anything, other than maybe cramming so much stuff in there that I caused a short somewhere.

So anybody have an idea? Really don't understand this because installing the amp is something completely separate from my previous setup which worked just fine. Yet it definitely has something to do with the amp install. I think I did everything right, but for some reason apparently right now there's tons of current running through my clock/radio circuit. Gotta be a short somewhere...

the problem is somewhere in the wiring of the amp... your power wire somewhere is touching eigther the body or touching the ground wire... if you really want to test it.. put an in-line fuse between the amp and the battery.. if that blows out.. you know it's the amp... if the rugular fuse blows and not the in-line one.. then there's something more serious...

sorry i can't be of more help.. but i blow out my radio fuse more often then once and it was because i sometimes touched together a power wire and a ground wire (accident)

hey thanks Tenzola, but I definitely installed the power wire to the amp with an 80A fuse 6 inches from the terminal (don't want to fry my car!!!) and that fuse is just fine--not blowing. if it was the amp wiring that was shorting this fuse would definitely blow out, right?

any other ideas?

I assume you are replacing fuse #43

-Audio Unit
-Clock
-ECM
-Heater control panel
-immobolizer indicator light
-multiplex control unit (driver's)
-multiplex control unit (passanger's)
-multiplex control unit (door)
-Security alarm system (canada)
-TCM

so of those following things did you touch any of those when doing the install?

I assume it's just a problem with your alpine HU, the wiring may be shorted out somewhere. I highly doubt the clock has to do with anything, but if you want to be sure check the wiring of the clock too.

Cliff notes: check the wiring of your HU and make sure there are no shorts anywhere
