if it makes it up to 7500 rpm, then it's working, if not....then it's not working

is the car cold when you are trying to get VTEC to engage? If so, that is the source of your problem.

 

Check your oil level. if low, add oil as needed - that's also a frequent culprit. The topic has been covered countless times and is usually resolved. A common search might be --> 'vtec not working'. Prelude Online crew is cool, but using the search feature on here will be your best friend. The car has been around awhile, so any problem you might have or mod you're considering has been covered 9 times out of 10. Good luck!

heres a thought: if this is a common problem and theres a common solution, how about just suggesting that to him instead of ridiculing him for not using the search function. youre wasting time typing the snide remarks anyways so why not just be productive and helpful? yeah, ive seen plenty of 'my vtec dont work' threads in my short time on the forum, but so what? its not like theyre spamming this low traffic forum and constantly pushing other threads to page 2. take it easy fellas

 

Well it is common but there could be many many variables. Obviously from the OP's post, you can discount he actually went out and did some investigative work and is asking a very specific question.

Sorry if you don't have time to do some work on your side, what do you expect from people on the other side of things to help for free?

Also most of the time people will tell you exactly what you need and they still don't listen. (look in 4th gen forum for the radiator thread)

After awhile it gets old.

for some sick, twisted, reason....people get pleasure out of this

there MAY be a sticky for it somewheres

 

clean vtec solenoid(x2)
and check the engine oil level, make sure its in the second dot.

and man cut the guy some slack........

 

when in doubt, change the oil and make sure you have a decent oil filter on there to make sure the oil pressure is where it should be.

I put mobil drive clean and a cheap fram filter on my jdm h22 and it worked fine....easiest oil change I ever did was on the engine hoist before putting it in the car

 

I am pretty sure your throttle has to be at a certain %. just keep the gas pedal to the floor and see what happens

 

I've never actually experimented but if I slowly accelerate in any gear my VTEC kicks in the moment it hits 5200 RPM. It is actually a pretty nice function. If you're just cruising down the highway at night not watching the speedometer, and all the sudden your engine note changes from mmmm to BAAAA you know instantly you are breaking every state speed law in the united states. Except for maybe the few areas out west with no posted speeds other than "Reasonable." Maybe it does need a certain throttle percentage to work, but if it does it can't be very much.

 

Being new doesn't mean anything. Everyone was new at one point. It's if you choose to want to learn on your own or expect people to just answer everything.

I know that I asked some stupid questions when i first started here but when someone told me to search, that was enough for me.

These cars are 20 years old now (h22 was introduced in 1991), you have to be naive to not thing almost every subject has been covered by now.

throttle has to be 100% and nothing less.

 

it could be something so simple as oil pressure. I haven't been on the site in a while but man people became assholes here all i see now is people hassling others, we need to improve on this site.... we should have like a tutorial and like a noob walkthrough period where mods have to approve of the first say 5 posts? but seriously people need to stop bashing all the noobs. however i do agree that there is no reason to misspell vtec...its written on your engine bay and trunk.

Like Petern mentioned, more work is needed on the OP's side. Go drive the car until engine is at normal operating temperature (halfway point on the temp gauge). From a stop, romp on the gas in first gear. See what happens and post the results. This will rule out throttle position.

If it doesn't kick in, use the Search feature. Try google as well, because there's a multipage thread devoted to this subject over on Honda-Tech.com.
