What gear do you do your dyno runs in?

I have an appointment to do baseline dyno runs next Tuesday morning. My car is a bone-stock 2000 Base 5spd.

What gear are you guys all doing your dyno runs in? Some people say 4th gear. Others say 3rd gear. I would think that 4th gear should give a more accurate picture since it is nearly a 1:1 ratio. But then I hear other people say that you should use third gear...

What gear are most people using?

Do 3rd and 4th. You are allowed 3 runs at least.

I did 3rd. So did Malken. (If 3rd's good enough for Malken, it's good enough for me

Hmmm.... So most people are running in 3rd? That surprises me, since 4th gear is so nearly 1:1. Why 3rd? Did your dyno shops recommend you run in third?

Ludakris is the only one on this board so far that I've heard that has run in 4th recently, and his numbers reflect it...

I wonder what gear Integras/Civics/ITRs run in....

My guys told me that the dyno correct for rpm/mph so I'm not sure.

3rd will show more hp i think...so maybe it will make you feel better

but another question...do you get to drive ur car on the dyno? or do they do it for you and you just watch? I dont want someone ragging my car out on the dyno

I'm almost positive no shop will let you do it for insurance reasons. Your standing right there so theres nothing they can really do, plus to get a good dyno pull your just basically flooring it til just before fuel cutoff.
Dyno pulls should always be done in the gear that is closest to 1:1. That is 4th gear in most cars. When I dyno a car, I will start in 2nd, and start to slowly acclertate to 3rd, then shift to 4th and hammer the gas. This where the dyno pull should take place. this is even true for most 6 spd cars as well.

Yeah, I know the lower gears will indicate higher HP and Torque. And that's what I'm afraid of...

I am dynoing my car for two reasons: 1)so that I can dyno again when I have my mods on and see what I've gained and 2)to be able to make relative comparisons to other Prelude owners dyno outputs to see what other parts might benefit me...

I'd like to run in 4th to get a realistic picture, but if I do that, it would make it that much more difficult to compare to most other people's dynos, since it seems many were done in 3rd for whatever reason...
