Well, recently, when I am at a dead stop and try to engage in the clutch in 1st gear, it has some weird noise (kind of like the sound when you first learn to drive a 5spd and shake the car - the gear just hit each other...). This will happen only when I try to engage the clutch from a dead stop in 1st. By the way, I have been driving 5spd for years, so I am pretty sure it is not b/c of my skill.

The car has about 30k miles and I change oil every 3k miles with brand names and filter. It is kind of strange because this will only happen in 1st and 2nd sometimes(but it is not as noticiable as in 1st, although you need to pay a little bit attention to notice it in 1st.) If I rev the engine past 2500rpm, I would not hear that sound(but I am not sure if it is because that the sound of the engine is louder or not.)

I have never have this sound before and need everyone's input on this. I will have a long road trip in 2 days and definitely want to have it fixed before (or someone can tell me what it is and is not very serious.)

I appreciate any valuable information on this!

I wouldn't know about that..but i'll tell you about my former situation. Everytime i changed gears from 4th to 5th past 3500 rpms, i would feel like a crunching sound on the shifter. I took it into the Honda Dealer and they said it was my syncho. So..it got repaired for free. Is you car under warranty?

Thanks, checkmate.

So, you don't have any noise if you shift under 3500rpm? From what I heard, the syncho. does not work when you start from a dead stop in 1st, is that right?(I am not sure about it.)

Yes, the car is still under warranty. How long did it take for the dealer to diag. and fix the problem? If it can be fixed in a day or 2, I will bring it in first thing tomorrow, otherwise, I might not take my Lude for the long trip.

True that..i was just describing something that happened to me. As for diagnosis.. the first time i took it in..they acted like nothing was wrong with it. So..I had to seek the advice of a professional mechanic friend and he told me it was most likely the synchro -- so i took it back and told them that. They finally admitted it and fixed it for free under warranty. And it did take about a week to get the parts.

So you can get the car into gear but when you start to let up on the clutch (engage it) the car starts to shake? And you mentioned it also happens when you're shifting into second. Does the sound only happen after you have it into gear and when you're re-engaging the clutch? Or are you starting off in 2nd gear? If your car is already in the gear, then it can't be a synchro problem. If it's happening when you're letting up on the clutch, then the problem is most likely coming from that area. Hope this helps.

I have the exact same problem !!!

I had my car in for some other unrelated waraanty work and I told Honda to listen for an howling like noise. Sure enough they said it was fine.
I'm gonna try a different dealership.

If you get it fixed, please let me know what was wrong with your car.

Ok, let me make it a little bit clear on what is happening on my car:

At a dead stop, I push the clutch in and push the stick in gear 1. When the light turns green, I rev the engine to about 1.5k and engage the clutch to move the car(I am not doing double-clutch or anything, just normal start from a dead stop.) and then, right at the time the car get power from the engine(someone call it the sweet point on a 5spd), I hear some noise and it continued until the clutch is fully engaged(Not the one click like normally you release the clutch, even it is in neutral.) Is this sound like the synchro of 1st gear?

I always think that the synchro. only works if your car is moving, not at a dead stop, am I correct? The other thing need to mention is: If I rev the engine higher (i.e: 2k-2.5k) and engage the clutch the same way, I can't hear the sound.

Let me know what you guys think.

99Prelude_LC: How can you get a free rental car for that service? I contact 2 dealers and no one offers that.

not related to the first post, but 5th Gens do have a tendency to have a bad "shift fork (?)" - which i think is related to the syncro... Last summer my '97 started grinding from 3rd to 5th and 4th to 5th at high rpms. Dealer took care of the problem under warranty - i even think there is a TSB out on it.
