Steering wheel shakes...

1500 Views 16 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Armadillo
Hey, I'm new here (well new at posting anyway).
My problem/question is: When i brake hard my steering wheel sorta shakes/jumps around a little in my hand. Its not bad enough that I start to drift into the other lanes or anything. I can not touch it and keep going straight, but it shakes a lot. Would this be the sign of a warped rotor or is this normal? Its not the ABS if thats what your thinking either, I know what that feels like. Thanks in advance.

Most likely it's a warped rotor. Depending how bad it is they can resurface the rotor and correct the problem. If they can't resurface it, you'll have to get new rotors.
May also be your wheel out of balance. ALot of times a balancing will cure this. Welcome aboard.

yea, but with it needing balanced, it would shake all the time, if hes just feeling it when he hits the brakes, it's most likely his rotors needing helped.

That is not always true about the unbalanced wheel being felt all the time. I have dealt with quite a few cars that have had the shaking steering wheel, I would check the run out on the rotors to make sure that they are not worn beyond limits, and make sure that they are not warped. Everything checked out, So I would do a wheel balance and rotation, and Voila, No more steering wheel shake. Sometimes the unbalanced wheel will only show itself upon braking, why I don't know, but it happens.
It's a common problem but not a big deal...basically your brake rotors are warped...you can do one of two things...get new rotors or get yours resurfaced.
when i got my new tires put on i noticed one of those little weight thingys on the rim was loose and fell off at some point, could that be it then if you say my wheels might be out of balance?

I have that same problem, I got it looked at and they said my rotors are warped to hell. anyone know how much something like that should cost to replace; rotors and labor??

you DEFINITELY need balance and rotation, if that little thing came off. My lude used to shake when i braked too, so i got a rotation and balance, and BOOM! it work!

Get someone at Honda to do it on the side. I know on some Accords, 90+ when you change the rotors, or have to pull them off, the wheel bearings will need repacked/replaced.

$120 if done on the side.

If you have the tools it should be no problem. $40 for pads, 5 bucks to turn the rotor. Check the disks, If ok then go for the balance.
Rt front was bad on mine but was able to turn it out and no problems with it now.

what the hell do you mean "turn the rotor"??
either warped rotors or you have sum old fix-a-flat in your tires
They mount the rotor on a machine. Put metal cutting bits on a yoke. Set the Yoke near the hub of your rotor. Then the machine cuts your disc true as the disc spins. Thus turning your rotor.
Oh yeah and use a hammer impact to turn that phillips head on your rotor if not that is a pain to get off.

Have fun hope this helps.
