I am thinking that the touch-up paint seals them pretty good (Since there is no way it can get rust if it is air tight or say, it is not exposed to air). The reason there is any rust is b/c the O2 in the air that make the metal parts get rusty. So, just apply a thick layer of touch-up paint should be serve the purpose.
