Im thinking cost wise the Quaife might be the cheaper of the two options but I haven't priced out the M2B4 LSD transmissions yet. Are there any performance differences in the way that the LSD actually works? Thanks in advance!

What does LSD stand for, or why is it so popular?

not trying to be mean or anything but even a first car owner should know this i just turned 17 and i have known this since i was little form playing video games LSD=limited slip differential and it is popular because The main advantage of a limited slip differential is the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels. sorry if i sounded like an @$$.

quiafe is a brand thats all
Not just any brand, one of the leading brands in LSDs.

There are only a few prelude applications with Quaife being the best (imo).

There is also Kaaz, obx, and of course the oem one offered on certain jdm transmissions.

lilbill, I would suggest you do a normal search if you are more curious to the benefits of this mod.

LSD will transfer to the wheel with the most traction.

I would go with a Quaife rather than try to import the S Spec transmission.

I thought the open stock differential worked to give more power to the wheel that had the most traction, and the LSD sends the power to the outter wheel that naturally would have less traction, not necessarily making it equal power.

wrong, try checking out google for 'open differential vs lsd'.
hmm well not totally. In cornering sure enough it does move more to the outter wheel, but lsds do bias the stronger tractioned wheel.

Here's from Quaife's site for the next guy who asks

"The Ultimate Differential

The Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing Helical LSD Differential enables your car to accelerate quicker and corner faster. How?
Simply by getting the power to the ground!

The Quaife differential powers both drive wheels under nearly all conditions, instead of just one.

With an normal open differential, fitted as standard on most cars, much precious power is wasted through wheel spin under acceleration. This happens because the open differential shifts power to the wheel with less grip - along the path of least resistance.

The Quaife differential, however, does just the opposite. It senses which wheel has the better grip, and automatically biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and constantly, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel.

In cornering, while accelerating out of a turn, the QUAIFE biases greater power to the outside wheel, reducing inside-wheel spin. This allows the driver to begin accelerating earlier, exiting the corner at a higher speed.

The Quaife differential also controls loss of traction when the drive wheels are on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow or mud, providing the appropriate biased traction needed to overcome these adverse conditions. The Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential provides constant and infinitely variable drive. Power is transferred automatically without the use of normal friction pads or plates seen in other limited-slip designs.

The Quaife ATB Hleical LSD differential's unique design offers maximum traction, improves handling and steering, and puts the power where it is needed most. A definite advantage, whether you are on the track or on the street.

The Quaife differential is extremely strong and durable, and since it is gear-operated, it has no plates or clutches that can wear out and need costly and regular replacement. There is no maintenance required to the unit, so once installed the unit can be forgotton, apart from the better road responses.

The Quaife differential is great for street driving or racing. Racers don't have to put up with locking mechanisms or spools that tear the steering wheel out of their hands when cornering. Because it behaves like an open differential during ordinary driving, street drivers will have trouble telling it's there until pushing the cars towards its limits."

I don't think normal shops will do this. Speaking from experience, you really need to take it to a transmission shop (especially one who knows what they are doing). Labor alone on mine came to $500, and I did half the work myself. So $1k is about inline. Installing a Quaife is hard, and easy to screw up.

Best bet is to find a racing shop who can do it real quick. Paid 300 to get my new m2y4 inspected, cleaned and install the Quaife LSD

Of course, add onto that $180 for my gas there and back from houston to dallas twice

You paid $300 for a Quaife install??? That's unreal. A good shop charges $100/hr, and a Quaife is like at least 3-4 hours, and that's if you really know what you are doing. That's not counting that you have to buy 2 $100 bearings new from Honda (which you didn't mention) and also have the correct Honda shims on hand (which dealers don't stock). I got luck by contacting Billy (71dsp) who has a small collection of shims I could use.

I would say your experience isn't typical ...

well todd actually did mine, ordered everything, inspected the transmission and everything. Good guys there, blazing quick, girlfriend and I didnt even have time to go see a movie before he was done heh

Is in the shop right now getting put on...hmm i wont thread jack here ill go post in my na thread
