well i need to clean my engine bay, but i only have one question. i painted my valve cover right before new years, but if i need to scrub some of my engine, do i have to be extra careful about my valve cover?

and i know i need to cover my intake, and distributor but what about the fuse box area, and my alarm horn?

thanks for the help...

I was just going to ask the same question. I went through some muddy puddles today and some mud splashed up inside the engine bay. Can you just take a hose and spray the inside? Or do I need to be a little more careful?

nonono, don't have the car running. Wait till the engine is cool so the soap/cleaner doesnt bake onto your engine and cover it with a haze. Also, don't rinse the engine bay with a water hose!

Get 2 buckets and 3 or 4 terry cloths/rags.
Mix one with 30% Simple Green cleaner and 70% clean water.
Fill the other with clean water.
Cover distributor cap and other electrical connections if you wish.
Scrub a portion of the engine bay with the Simple Green solution and let it sit a moment.
Wipe off the section with the rag dipped in clean water.
Dry off section with dry rag.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

as for your painted valve cover, it really depends on the integrity of the paint you used. i would stry to stay away from strong acid cleaners like simple green.

recently i used Engine Brite and my dad has a small steam cleaner that i used to take off the loosened gunk. Very useful in those places where a rag or small brush doesnt fit.

When cleaning the engine compartment, it is very important not to damage the components and assemblies - for me personally, cleaning with steam is suitable, since it is gentle on surfaces and penetrates into the most difficult to reach places. When choosing a unit, be careful, if you want to take, for example, the popular Optima steam cleaner, then see the reviews Do not buy the Optima steamer before reading this which is real show the pros and cons of the model. I recommend.
