[Prelude UK]

Anyone had this problem before? I own a 2000 Honda Prelude 2.2VTi (H22A8) with the manual transmission. As of yesterday, it sometimes refuses to go into gear. The gear stick moves left and right, but refuses to go into gear, it just won’t budge, as if something solid is in the way. It's not revs related or temperature related. Then all of a sudden, it will be OK, shifting smoothly as ever. No nasty noises or any other symptoms. Clutch fluid level is fine. But on two occasions yesterday, it did grind slightly when changing up a gear, as if I had not pressed the clutch pedal down properly. On one occasion, I was stuck out of gear for 10 about seconds coasting along while trying to entice it into gear.

I'm wondering if it's clutch related, it's a bit like the clutch is not engaging / disengaging / whatever so it won’t go into gear. Master cylinder maybe?

i had this problem in my 91 it was the slave silonoid. check that out

check your slave and master and clutch lines for leaks.

My car did the same thing when it had 100K miles on it. It was a bad throwout bearing.

This evening, I dropped my car off for investigation / repair. The garage has already ordered a clutch master cylinder in anticipation 'cos we reckon that part is the most likely to be at fault (and is cheaper than a clutch or manual gearbox). Hopefully, I should find out tomorrow.

£202.41 and a new clutch master cylinder later and it still has the same fault It has now also developed a slight rattle/rustle which is audible at idle. I'm feeling ill thinking about how much this is gonna cost to put right. I'm currently making enquiries regarding the LSD equipped Accord Type-R gearbox (U2Q7) compatibility.

I am having the same problem. My car will not go into any gear at any time. I replaced my master cylinder as well, but to no avail.
I also have the same rattle at idle and when I turn the engine off. I suspect it is something off balance rotating inside the clutch.
Let me know what you find out.

Maybe someone can help me with a similar problem. My clutch engauges when the car has sat for a few hours and it drives fine. But after going less than a mile the car just revs and does not move, the gear shifter slips into the gear positions that it should but it does not engauge. Feels like trying to drive with the clutch pressed in. Pedal response is good. Any ideas???

I have a master and slave cylinder on the way and a stainless clutch line.

Is just time to repalce u r clutch = =" the problem is on the clutch disc there are 4or 6 spring that mount in the clutch disc one of them was broken(that's where the rattle/rustle sound come from~~~) is a very comont problem on the 5 gen lude they make the clutch disc too weak= = I have the same problem on my car 3 time already and every time i replace the clutch the problem fixed~~~~~~

Same symptoms happened to my 4th gen back in the day and it was the throwout bearing.

Update on my situation:

It wasn't definite if the fault was with the clutch or gearbox, so I chose to get both replaced to make sure.

On 14/01/2009, I purchased an Exedy OE clutch kit for £140 from a UK based retailer.

On 17/01/2009, I took my car to a gearbox specialist 25-30 miles from home to get the gearbox replaced and my new clutch fitted at the same time. When I booked my car in, I was told they had an Accord Type-R gearbox (U2Q7) ready on the shelf and my car would be ready on Monday PM if I dropped it off on Saturday. On the Wednesday 21/01/2009 I discovered that they didn't have the gearbox. After loads of empty promises to call me back and being fobbed off, I lost faith in them and collected my car on the Friday 23/01/2009 and saw that they had not even touched my car. A whole week wasted.

Whilst driving home, my clutch pedal was behaving strangely, sometimes it was very heavy. This backs up the general consensus that the clutch is at fault rather than the gearbox. Because of this, I have decided to not bother replacing the gearbox.

When I got home on 23/01/2009, I ordered a Fidanza Flywheel off of Gripforce-Clutches on eBay for £156 which was scheduled to be delivered last Thursday (29/01/2009). UPS are being knob heads so the flywheel has been delayed. Rescheduled for delivery today, but because of the recent snow fall, the UK has ground to a halt, so I'm not holding my breath for it to be delivered today. I'm typing this at home as I'm unable to get to work because the county has ground to a halt as it always does following snow!

Last week after checking the clutch kit part numbers, I discovered that the clutch I was sent is designed for the 4th gen Prelude so last Friday (30/01/2009), I ordered a proper 5th gen Exedy OE clutch kit for £195. A couple of days after ordering the 5th gen Exedy OE clutch kit, I discovered that the 4th gen and 5th gen clutches are interchangeable! So, I'll be having a spare clutch for sale once my car is sorted.

So the current status is that I'm waiting for the Fidanza flywheel and 5th gen Exedy OE clutch kit. When I have both, I shall book my car in at my usual Independent Honda specialist garage to get the parts fitted.

hi here is a suggestion since you are going to replace the flywheel u might want a stage 1 clutch set to handle the increase touqe to prlong your clutch life (I believe the lightweight flywheel will working fine with your OE clutch set like I say this is just a suggestion) and for what I heard if the flywheel is too light it might cause the idel surging since u can't go anywhere do some research then....... good luck

I've edited my earlier post from 02/02 which originally read "UK customs officials are being knob heads so the flywheel has been delayed". Found out today that it is UPS which are being absolute dicks because Customs have never kept hold of my package. Should be getting the flywheel tomorrow (one week late) as well as the 5th gen Exedy OE Clutch Kit.

It's a bit late to get the stage 1 clutch now 'cos I've already spent £195 on the 5th gen Exedy OE Clutch kit (and also £140 on the 4th gen Exedy OE Clutch Kit too).

you must check your clutch or gearbox.
