I am gonna keep it short and simple, my car recently warmed up and ready to go works great as usually S3 and S4 can be used.

Everything is great up until when I leave school for the day, the drive back goes fine then my S3 light begins blinking. No stress on the car is put, to get down from campus it is a lot of downhill and surface streets to get to home.

Shop has no clue what is causing it, transmission fluid was switched up and nothing there. Looked at the TCU and ECU, nothing related to the light flashing pops up other than my MAP sensor needing to be replaced. When this is happening I know my temperature gauge acts funky, moving up and down when I go over a speed bump, or goes all the way down if I hard accelerate.

We ruled out the tranny solenoids as they are all working in perfect order. If anyone has had the same problem how did you work around it or fix it? Its my daily driver, 102k miles, 88 2.0 Si 4WS. Thanks!

It's your VSS sensor. Replace it. It's placed on your tranny .

I’ll try that, do you know anything related to the temp gauge? It’s completely dead now. I’m not sure if something in the cluster isn’t letting the gauge work or if the thermostat is dead

re: blinking S3 light...
You need to get Honda 2-volume 88 Prelude Service Manual --- it has a chart of sequence of probable causes (VSS, as I recall, was one, which we replaced)...it also states that there may be a short at one of several (3 or 4) junction blocks, but since it otherwise runs perfectly (@ passed smog test with no adjustments)(@ checked the CPU with a second backup CPU), I live with the intermittant S3 light....I have 88 Lude SI w/260,000 mi....

In relation to your temp gauge not working anymore,it's not your thermostat it's the temp sensor, there's are two of them I believe. One being at the bottom if your radiator, and one in the emgineblock, near the thermostat. That latter one will probably be faulty.
As stated above, the repair manual can be downloaded at the 3 Geez forum on Facebook, it's under the tabs.

My cluster sensor is intermittent that’s what the shop said, the temperature gauge was fixed there was a faulty corroded line in the cluster itself and now works like a charm. If I don’t let the car warm up for 5+ minutes the VSS sensor begins to flash and then goes my check engine on. Car has 103k miles and has been like that since I got it, just wanna get rid of the sensor problem, you know any fix?
