performance mods

Hello all, I'm a lude newbee... I was just given a 1997 sh. Im going ahead with an engine swap this week. Any suggestions as to performance mods I can or should make before I install the engine? I purchased a stage 1 clutch kit. I also dont want to spend a ton of money. $1000 or so.

Thanks

You have much reading to do on this website and others.

1st of all if you have an SH and are doing an engine swap, there are many threads on that topic. The reason it's a "hot" topic is that you can't buy the JDM (japanese) H22A and slap it in there. You end up having to buy another USDM type SH motor, or JDM type-s motor (overpriced), or rebuild your current motor.

How many miles on the block you are pulling out? Also, how many miles on the swap block and what are you paying for it? (so we can make sure you aren't getting raped). Why not take the $1000 and put it into internal mods and rebuild your current block with some higher comp pistons or something?

The thing about our motors is they are highly refined. You can't just slap an Intake, Header and Exhaust and gain 20whp. Intake +-1whp, header +-10whp, exhaust +-1-5whp (and I do mean the negative symbols to be there, some mods will lose power if you don't know what you are buying).

Also, I hope you have a 5-speed manual transmission and not an auto. If you do have an auto I would get a JDM H22A with 5-speed transmission and swap it all out at once. Then you have a fresh block and trans that wont die any second.

There is soooo much more info like what I typed above said over and over and over in this forum. It is likely you will get flamed for not searching before you post. It's not that your question isn't relevant, but questions just like it have been asked hundreds of times on this forum and others. Our cars stopped being produced in 2001 so most of the questions since then have already been answered.

Replace every seal and do the entire 90k mile service while the motor is out of the car. Maybe even take the intake manifold off and have it hot tanked to clean it up.

These aren't performance mods, but it is good maintenance.

As for mods, that's up to you if you want, we can't tell you if you want a stock car, a fast car, or a car meant for off-road use.

Fixed and fixed.

Maybe not with an ebay header but you could easily gain 20 whp from ihe. And I'm pretty sure the SH didn't ever come in an SS

Correct, no Sissy-Stick version of the SH.

Of course if you did a good I/H/E AND tuned you could achieve that 20whp gain, but you'll never do that for $1000 and I was attempting to stay within his budget and educate him that you cannot just "slap on" those items ("slap on" implying no tuning involved) and expect those gains.

I was attempting to instill in him that making good n/a hp with these cars isn't cheap and requires a lot of research. He can take any section of my post and research it and more to answer many questions he will ask before he asks them

Edit:

I stand my my numbers, if you disagree show me proof or it didn't happen. You will not gain 20whp with IHE. Intake is negligible, if you do an exhaust with stock piping it's practically negligible, headers have some decent gains (real nice ones, like the one in the group buy on this site might gain you ~8whp w/ stock exhaust). But seriously, you would need a tune to gain the full 20whp.

Lets see what real gains cost:
Header: $450 tri-y on ebay or check the group buy for a better price
Full 2.5" SS piping with mandrel bends and labor: $700 (what it cost me, might vary but there is literally 1 shop in my area that does custom exhaust)
Magnaflow hi-flow cat: $100
Decent Muffler: $100
OBD1 ECU w/ Hondata S300: $490 (phearable)
You could just get an OBD1 ECU for $175 and get someone to use a cheaper software on it than Hondata, but I'm trying to avoid typing a frikkin book here so don't bust my chops on all the variables here.
OBD2 -> OBD1 Harness: $104
+ Dyno time $50-100s depending on where you are and how much time on the dyno you want
Not including wideband, gauges, etc if you wanted them.

And with all the above money spent you will probably gain that 20whp or a bit more depending on other variables.

To enthusiasts like me who will keep the car forever, totally worth every penny.

Sorry on the SH auto thing. SH was only 5 speed, my mistake.

Total: $960

With that alone, you'll gain a minimum of 15whp (peak) guaranteed, but 20whp is definitely possible with a healthy engine.

Tuning with a VAFC should take about 30 minutes by a good tuner, cuz there's only so much you can do with it.
