I'm picking up my 97 HC-2 Lude from the shop tomorrow after roll cage re-install and tuning. I was quite suprised with the results. I expected in the 185 range. 199whp with 162 ft/lb. Compression Test 195-200-180-205.
Have the following mods:
Cosmo Racing 3" Cold Air Intake
Megan Racing Headers w/collector cut and cat removed
Apexi WS exhaust (I know this needs to go)
Crower Springs and Retainers
Manual Tensioner
No Balance Belt - Balance shaft still installed
Lightened Flywheeel (not sure whose, is chromoly)
P72 w/chrome tuning
Upcoming mods:
hondata gasket
EGR remove
evap remove and route to intake vacuum
next year, Type-S rebuild and swap.
I have to say that ripping this car apart has been a blast. Trying to do everything to lighten it and extract more power has taught me so much about the lude. Can't wait until the Pocono race this weekend to see how she performs.
Any cam? Also are you concerned about having a 20-25 psi variance between two cylinders on that motor? BTW what type of dyno, those numbers are pretty good with those mods.
Stock Cam. Engine has to be 100% either USDM or JDM for class.
185 is the average compression for a healthy H22. I think I would be more concerned if I was in the 160-170 compression range. Figured I'd check it after this weekend's races. There are 2 sprints and a 90 minute enduro. If it's still the same, I'll keep going until It's an issue.
It runs like a beast now. The tuner has a 600+ HP STI and a 900+ HP Nissan and he was impressed how it felt after the work was done.
That's some impressive numbers! Let us know how you did in Pocono in the Autocross & Road Racing section after this weekend. I'd be interested to see how the car runs then.

car came with the springs and retainers. The Cams looked ok with no wear when we had it opened the other day.
50k on engine.
Had 163HP before we started all this. Their dyno was close to the 162 I had on the dynojet baseline I did last year. Even if the numbers are off a little, it is a huge improvement over what it was before. I'm sure going OBD1 and dumping much of the emissions systems helps with the higher numbers. EGR is not engaged (soon to be removed). Cat is gone.
Solid hp numbers. All dynos read differently. We use a mustang dyno and dyno jet. And they both read about 10whp from each other. It does not necessarily mean one is right and the other wrong. In the end the dyno is diagnostic device and if you make changes, go back to the same dyno. Hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Max-

EGR and emissions equiptment (other than the cat) will not affect horsepower numbers. EGR does not opperate at WOT and evap willl not purge under WOT. The advantage to their removal is weight and space not hp.
Springs and retainers may actually hurt performance slightly if not needed. They will increase in pumping loses due to the stiffer spring, making it work harder to open the valve.
Ok so I had the car re-dyno'd on a dynojet dyno. 180HP with the same 137 lbs of torque. Shows how much of a difference in dyno's. I don't have a working scanner at the moment so I can't scan in the graphs. Will try to get that done soon.
After driving this past weekend, it didn't feel like a 40hp increase. The car (and driver - me) did very well with the 20HP increase. Enough to eat up a bunch of miatas.
