v4.5 header tested with good results

Its taken me a few weeks to get the time to do a back-to-back with my current prototype. I took a nap (and gulped the ice coffee) after work today and did the test, but as you'll see it was worth while:

averaged test run results: +4.568 average whp gains, +3.2 peak whp gain

you can look at the raw, csv data HERE in an *.xls file)

actual gains are between this:

..and this:

I was as precisce as I could be in doing this test, adjusting for the -10lbs weight in the new header, making sure fuel weight was the same, tire pressure, driver weight, disconection VAFC totaly, getting weather data (from 2 sources) and compensation factors, exact same procedure for both manifold's tests etc etc. Here is my test info and more comparative graphs (best/worst, best/best etc):

********07/12/04 v4.5 vs. OE manifold test ***********
8:53 PM
temp:78.1 °F / 25.6 °C
dew: 72.0 °F / 22.2 °C
humidity: 81%
baro: 29.85 in / 1010.8 hPa
wind: NNW 3.5 mph / 5.6 km/h
localy observed temp: 76.8f

SAE J1349 compensation for 8:53pm: 1.045
as always, BB6 aero drag loss estimate at 64mph = ~13whp

test runs:
A1= 136.8 high
A2= 133.0 (pruned)
A3= 135.5 avg
A4= 135.1 low
A5= 139.6 (pruned)

AAVG (- hi&lo) = 135.8 = A3

11:53 PM
temp: 73.0 °F / 22.8 °C
dew: 71.1 °F / 21.7 °C
humidity: 93%
baro: 29.88 in / 1011.6 hPa
wind: NW 4.6 mph / 7.4 km/h
localy observbed temp: 71.9f

SAE J1349 compensation for 11:53pm: 1.037
as always, BB6 aero drag loss estimate at 64mph = ~13whp

test runs:
B1= 129.8 low
B2= 134.9 avg
B3= 138.1 (pruned)
B4= 135.0 high
B5= 124.8 (pruned)
B6= 127.7 (pruned for BAVG2 im being generous here)

BAVG1 (- hi&lo) = 131.85 = B1
BAVG2 (- hi&lo) = 133.2 = B2

I averaged B1 and B2 in the *.xls file above for final results

comparative test runs:

A4 (v4.5 low) vs. B4 (OE high) = +0.1 peak

A1 (v4.5 high) vs. B6 (OE low) = + 9.1 peak

A1 (v4.5 high) vs. B4 (OE high) = +1.8 peak

A4 (v4.5 low) vs. B6 (OE low) = +7.4 peak

A3 (v4.5 avg1) vs. B1 (OE avg1) = +5.7 peak

A3 (v4.5 avg1) vs B2 (OE avg2) = +0.6 peak

total (avg, high and low) average = 3.87 peak

averaged (A3 vs B1 and B2) test run results: +4.568 average whp gains, +3.2 peak whp gain

Whew.... Its been a year and a half's worth of (after work) time for this, and I think this v4.5 prototype is prodcution worthy.

Good thing i've already worked out many of the manufacturing (made in US), business, and distribution details.... Time for bed, Im happy.

*07/13/04 edit: I removed the high and low runs from the data, I should have done this last night (earlier this morning ) but i was sleapy. The numbers are still good, even though i gave all (minor) advantage to the OE tests and data (check my math, and note the temp)

Good job man!!!

All the hard work seams to have paid off! When these get mass produced, I want to have the first one!

Good results man. Looks like you got some nice midrange gains. I'll be interested in a header when you get production ready.

thanks guys!

I removed the high and low runs from the averaged results and did 2000rpm-through peak averaged numbers in a*.csv based *.xls file (those are the 4.568, 3.2 numbers). Id realy like to see what the header does on your JSRC car paluce.... got any time in the next few weeks?

Im going to look into the business side today...

Hey Brett,

Your collector OD is 2.5" right? And refresh my memory, I know you have some type of high-flow cat and an exhaust but I can't remember what they are. IIRC you have a 2.5" cat and 2.5" custom exhaust?

Hey BAR fan,

development vehicle is a 98 sh with:
intake, AEM pullies, ES mount inserts, 2.5" cat, 2.5" Brullen exhaust and i have a VAFC but I physicaly disconected it for testing (like it might as well have been in the trunk, in a box).

I've got material for a whole exhaust and im working on design for a H22 specific mufler. I would like to be able to offer a tuned, port-to-tail product set, but im going to pursue just the header for now.

sorry, no talky talky about any dimensions right now Its larger that OE though Im also specing components for some
D-E-L-U-X-E features that i've never seen offered on a Honda header before.

Im so glad Sato didnt DNF last weekend!!! BOOM!!! Im no big fan of Button though, with that motor he should be on he podium every race.... Hey can anyone else understand that British guy that does Speed's F1 commentary? My wife busts out laughing everytime she hears his voice, that dude sounds like an excited ton-ton (with a stuffy nose) from Empire Strikes Back. anyway, back to headers.

Does that mean these results are still all untuned? If so, I would expect a bigger differential between tuned and untuned. Either way, excellent work!!! It is very good data.

OK, so I was right about the cat & exhaust. I'm just trying to compare your setup to what I might have when I get around to puchasing a header. I will most likely be sticking with my current exhaust for a while (Apex'i WS, 60mm piping). But I have a chance to pick up a 2.25" Random Tech cat for an attractive price. I'm trying to figure out how it will interact with future exhaust mods, hense my question about the collecter outlet. I understand about you not giving out dimensional info (I'm in engineering too ). Oh well.

Yeah, Sato finished, but there were rumours that they de-tuned his engine some so it would last the race. Did you notice he was slower than Button this week, when previously they were running very close to each other or Sato was a bit faster. Interesting. It's funny you mention the commenator. My GF thinks he is hilarious as well. She does a very good impression of him. The best his pronunciation of 'garage' and 'Toyota'.

lepto,

I always have time to slap that header on my car!

But the only thing is my current results are tunned and throwing your header on would require more tunning. which means more $$$. Now that's not a problem, but I'd want to do that when I would have a header of my own so it could stay on for good! How long untill production do you think???

BTW, I also have a 2.5" high flow cat I'd like to put on and test at the same time as your header instead of the stock cat. What do you think...

Can anyone decipher these dyno plots for me? i can't understand what's going on. Which one is the new product, and what is he comparing it to? Stock? i just need a plain dyno sheet. i can make my own conclusions from there.

Man, if you can sell a header that gives between +5 & +10 lb/ft. of torque across the board for $500, you're going to do VERY well . . . . .

Congrats!

gopher,

I use an aceleromter for testing (we'll dyno this one too though) here is a post about the testing:

lepto v3.5 gtech testing

if your a player, just look at the A3 vs. B1 test run, if your a hater then look at the A3 vs. B2 run and if your a dorky engineer and want the most accurate idea look at the averaged raw data in the Excel file....

i just worked out the averaged torque gains, its +3.87ft/lbs from 2000RPM through peak if you average B1 and B2 for the OE manifold perfomance. Thats from the same data that the +4.568whp number comes from.
