type s piston revisited

Hey guys as we all know the NA route is fun and keeps with the true spirit of the car but has its own pitfalls.. so revisiting the jdm type s piston..
Dan (dy101) bent valves with a portflow valvetrain and a type s piston and a slight mill but not radicle at all i believe its .0020. Is it that the type piston has the valve relief for the type s head and thus needs to be modified when running larger cams (crower stage 2+)? Or should the anlge of the valve job match that of the type s head..btw dan has SS prelude with the stock fuel cut and if you guys have drove theses ITS IMPOSSIBLE to over rev the car when in SS mode period it just wont do it..so any idea how this happend? thanks guys

I'm running the same setup, but with type-s cams (and not SS ) and havent' had any problems like that... i dunno if crower stage 2 would make that big a diff... but how the hell do you bend valves on a SS?

at the time i DID NOT have the type s pistons. I just had a .020 mill with crower stage 2 cams, portflow valvetrain, and stock pistons. My new rebuild will have the same but WITH the type s pistons. James Chan is running the same setup with slightly larger valves, and he had the valve reliefs in the piston machined out to accomidate the larger valves. I dont know if running the type s pistons in a USDM motor (slightly different head geometry then type S head) and larger cams then the type s (crower stage 2) would cause piston to valve contact. Im sure my motor builder will test everything to make sure that there is none.

Which rods are you guys using with your Type S pistons?? And I hope there isn't an issue with Crower 2's and these pistons since this is the setup I'm going with.

im just using stock rods. IMO if you are staying NA and dont intend to rev over the stock fuel cut then its not nesessary to get forged rods. Shot peening the stock rods might be a cost effective option, but not that nesessary either. Well the only other person i know who is running cower stage 2's and type s pistons is james chan. As far as i know he has not had any problems at all with his motor.

cmon james reply to this thread
