Setup in this months Import Tuner, 1994 SRV 230hp/187tq to the WHEELS

Page 103, the issue that has better than sex on the front ..

he's got a pretty stealth looking lude, mugen body kit .. no clear lights etc. you couldnt really tell it from stock at a glance, even his air intake isn't all chromed up .. he probably opened up the pipe but it didn't say in the article .. anyways, here's what he did :

guy works in a tuning shop so he's had time to play

USDM H22:

+XS Ecu that goes to 8500RPM
+A'pex V-AFC
+rev-limiter because he apparently downshifted from 5th to 2nd at freeway speeds .. (oops?)
+KG/AD special head combination .. translated:
the combustion chambers were welded and the ports were hand polished by kurt gordon,
+type-s camshafts
+type-s valve springs
+0.5mm oversize stainless steel valves, crower titanium retainers .. "My **** is revvin' on the rizzeal, yo."
+Spoon cam sprockets
+Vortech fuel pressure regulator
+Factory Intake is modified, he didnt say how but its filtered through a spoon drop in, rc throttle body, hand ported intake manifold.
+Spoon spark plug wires,
+Spoon radiator cap
+DC sports header,
+Aries Special "super hi flow" cat converter
+GReddy SP exhaust painted / hi-temp low gloss black (his cars black too so its super stealth yo!) the article and his ghetto talk are annoying.
+ACT Xtreme pressure plate
+Energy Suspension motor mounts
+TEIN HA coilovers, pillowball mounts.
+spoon front tower bar
+powerstops hawk plus brake pads
+16" mugen mf-8's

deadly ... what does half this **** do ? anybody want to break it down and explain it for the rest of the people who don't know all the advancements to this stuff? (mainly me .. )

lik welding the chamber etc .. i know the n/a stuff but spooning pistons, camshaft, springs, sprockets, ecu, titanium retainer, stainless steel valves .. fuel pressure regulator? radiator cap ? (accesorize ? or does it do something ) and what about porting and polishing? I know it does little but whats the benefit?

thanks ! (this could be a novel of an educated post.) w00t

230hp/187tq to the WHEELS

With those mods only? I smell something funny here.

This is bordering on hard to believe unless that ECU was tuned VERY aggressively. Did they say what octane fuel it was run on?

Here's your breakdown:

+XS Ecu that goes to 8500RPM
This tells almost nothing by itself, but the ECU could be remapped with very aggressive timing (more torque and power by removing Honda's margin of safety) and less fuel and a lower VTEC point (though the VAFC could do that as well).

+A'pex V-AFC
Used to adjust VTEC changeover point and fuel map to improve a/f ratio and power band. Usually a custom ECU renders this unnecessary, unless you are still tuning (ECU incorporates changes the VAFC makes).

+rev-limiter because he apparently downshifted from 5th to 2nd at freeway speeds .. (oops?)
Dumbass.

+KG/AD special head combination .. translated:
the combustion chambers were welded and the ports were hand polished by kurt gordon,
The head is welded to either provide more material to work with/shape, fix "goofs" in p/p work, or provide a higher CR without changing pistons. Generally the "best" heads have been welded to add material in the bowl or ports to reduce the size of the ports in places to improve the shape and/or torque by reducing the size.

+type-s camshafts
+type-s valve springs
+0.5mm oversize stainless steel valves, crower titanium retainers .. "My **** is revvin' on the rizzeal, yo."
This strikes me as odd... given a Crower or Jun stage 2 cam, he would likely produce more power and have a better match for the valves. To each his own, though. The Type S gear provides more lift and duration for improved flow through the head (as do the larger valves).

+Spoon cam sprockets
Allow you to adjust the cam timing to tweak it for optimal power/torque at a given RPM.

+Vortech fuel pressure regulator
Bump fuel pressure to meet the demands of a more thirsty engine.

+Factory Intake is modified, he didnt say how but its filtered through a spoon drop in, rc throttle body, hand ported intake manifold.
Odd. Crappy intake, a better CAI would provide more torque and probably more power, a short ram would definitely provide more power on the top end. The IM can be improved on a lot, which I assume was done.

+Spoon spark plug wires,
Doubt there's any gain here.

+Spoon radiator cap
No gain here. Helps keep the rad from boiling over under hard conditions. More bling-bling than anything.

+DC sports header,
So-so header. Better than stock, not worth the money, not worth much power. More bling-bling than anything. Better off with a Mugen or modifying the header with a collector to match the exhaust size.

+Aries Special "super hi flow" cat converter
Worth a few HP but I would suggest a header, test pipe, and exhaust that are all matched in diameter for max power.

+GReddy SP exhaust painted / hi-temp low gloss black (his cars black too so its super stealth yo!) the article and his ghetto talk are annoying.
That whole magazine is annoying.

+ACT Xtreme pressure plate
Help keep the clutch from slipping from that mad power, yo. Probably a good idea at 230HP. WTF kind of dyno was that, anyhow?!

+Energy Suspension motor mounts
Help keep wheel hop down.

+TEIN HA coilovers, pillowball mounts.
+spoon front tower bar
+powerstops hawk plus brake pads
+16" mugen mf-8's
All handling, baby.

There is absolutely no ****ing way an H22A 90.7mm crankshaft can make 187ft.lb of torque to the wheels. I'm sorry but that is just BS....my H23 crank only made 160....most H22a cranks make 150 MAX

Here's a dyno of 2point6's 2.44L 98mm crank, he made 229hp/175tq which is very awesome with his setup.

You can see his setup at http://www.collectiveracing.net/ and see what it really takes to make that power...

marcucci you rock man! thanks for taking the time to post all that .

just a few more questions on the intake and welding ..

filtered through a spoon drop in, rc throttle body, hand ported intake manifold.

spoon drop ? throttle body (i dont even know what this si) and hand ported ? ..

Whats the deal with port n polish anyways ?

+KG/AD special head combination .. translated: .. Where is it welded ? what does CR stand for ?

thanks again!

I agre its a bit hard to take, it showed no dyno so ...

just the way teh guy was talking he seems really shady .. claims theres no forced induction or nos .. but 230 to the WHEELS ? .. with that much torque ...

I dunno .. working in a tune shop still .. maybe he's got it bored.. who knows ..

Spoon drop...he means a spoon drop in filter in a stock airbox..pretty crap setup, I agree

This guy is obviously running a stock bottom end. He can't bore out without sleeving...which they would have mentioned. How could have put in type-s pistons but they are not mentioned either...the fact that the chamber was welded screams of a stock bottom end.

Once again a stock bottom end will make maybe 150tq max.

Type-S cams? Come on...type-s cams can not make 230whp...they can't even make power past 7200rpms....

The whole article smells...

its BS man, That type S cams won't make that kind of power especially he is doing 8.5K, even Crower or skunk stage 2 can barely make power up there, might not even get there

if you actually read import tuner, you would know that he didn't want to talk about muhc of what's he's actually done to the lude, he just kept saying stealth mod, and don't forget he works for dynamic and did trillion times of tuning and dyno to make everything match and work out right

Well, without knowing all the mods or a dyno plot I'll tell you that my B20A makes 200WHP, not bad for a NA 2.0L. Someone from a magazine come and take pics and write whatever BS *I* have to say...

Aries, the mechanic at Dynamic Autosports(they do very quality work) in Lake Forest has a 4th gen. with type-S cams, lots of headwork and bolt-ons. But they claim at Dynamic that it makes around 230 whp NA. I bet its not streetable at all though.
I know this sound ridiculous.I'll try to find out what else he has next time I go in.

Aries from what I understand is the head dyno tuner tech at dynamic autosports, he mentions in the whole article that he is not real excited about telling everybody everything he has in his car. I haven't been there personally, but if his 4th gen does have 230 wheel horsepower, I think I will cruising over there to have him tune mine with some tips on what I should do, they are only like ten minutes from me. I have heard alot of good things about there shop also. So who knows maybe he is not bullshi#ing.
