i read through some links but i am unclear on the need-to-knows about h23 motors

i want a stage 3 cam
i would need to upgrade pistons for a high compression, what im guessing
are the cylinder walls permanantly fixed in h23 motors ?

Oh ok. Let me feed you some basics to get you started:
  • The H23 block is completely identical to an H22 block. I have had both side by side, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that the entire casting is the same (some don't believe this, so I like to emphasize).
  • H22/H23 blocks use FRM as a cylinder liner. This unfortunately presents us big problems. There is a very detailed thread on the FRM liners in the N/A library which will tell you why this is a big deal.
  • The only high compression pistons that are known to work off-the-shelf are the OEM Type-S pistons. Some say that the Mahle's work, but I have yet to see quantifiable proof that they work. However, the Type-S are not a drop-in for the H23 rotating assembly. There was a thread written awhile ago on the requirements for using a Type-s pistons in an H23 motor. You will have to search for it.
  • Given your situation, I think you are going to need to rebuild the bottom end to get the compression you want. This is going to be time consuming and expensive.
  • If you want a cheaper solution, you can mill the head a little (and/or run flat-faced valves). This should net you some small improvement in compression, but it will be around .5 or so.
