lepto's v2 prototype header done

completed v2 prototype today, here it is:

I'll install it this week (when i get time off work) for testing. I'll build one for bb1 h22 fit next, then bb6 base/ss. have to go back to work now (sunday 11pm) I'll post more latter.

ps- good thing i studied photography in college eh... not a bad pic. and while im tooting my own horn, those are all flux cored mig welds (production will be TIG, but dont have such a nice set up at home). Oh yeah, Vapor, i had to keap the pipes inside till i was ready to weld them, and then MAPP torch them just a little to get the preheat temp right. LOL WINTER SUCKS!... want to be a race car engineer in Peutro Rico!!!

Damn, that's a great looking prototype! Your header is the first one I've seen with straight sections of pipe coming right off the mounting flange.. Is that part of your special design or a result of the equipment used? Also, did you combine the pipes differently (in reference to cylinder firing order)? I have heard of an H22 header made for the Civic that combines the pipes in a unique way and makes huge power gains.

Is this the header Satan_SRV is going to test out?

His is a 4-1, so no special pairings.
It looks pretty good. Hopefully it performs!
What is the ground clearance like with that huge merge collector?
I remember SMSP was going for a 4-1 at first, but had major clearance issues and ended up going with a 4-2-1.

Thanks guys, glad you like it!

notorius/alpha, i am playing with in-collector pairing on this 2nd prototype, not as fancy as a collector from Burns, but simialar. As for clearance, i studied SMSP (and Mugen and Hytech and Honda and others) manifolds, i did two things that help with clearance. My pipes arent stacked like "88"at the front bottom, because of the mid-flanges pipe hole arrangement. Also, this design is using smaller pipes (please refrain from the "bigger is always better" banter, read www.headersbyed.com) than most of what Dave does. Thats a design choice, but im pretty confident in my desicsion. I still want to see full exhasut, customer car dynos from one of Daves headers, im realy currious, his work is realy great.

gonna see if my boss will let me take tomarow off (not that i havent put in about 16 hours of unpaid overtime in last week). If i can then i'll install the v2 header tomorow. w00t!

edit: oh yeah, as for the off-flange pipe, thats deffinately a design choice, it forces an extra weld, but keaps velocity higher. When we go to production (and have a manderel bender to use) the bends on the 2&3 pipes will be adjusted to allow for the exact same length of "off-flange" pipe for all 4 tubes. Glad you noticed!

Wait I'm confused...so I'm not testing the header in the pic...you're building another one?

Because you could just reweld the collector length if you want me to test that one.

whoo hoo, my benevolent boss let me take tomarow off so i'll install this one for a shake down test.

Satan, if BB1/H22 requires a longer post collector section, then we could just make a flanged extension and use this one. But i need this one or the next for the foundation for the production tooling (going to re-jig). My initial plan was to build a dupe of this one (up to the collector) and then measure, cut, tack and weld the post collector section when you drove down... Lets PM to figure it out.

Also, paulace, you out there? want to be the 5spd/ss fit test?

The NTPOG guys have offered to do fit and dyno tests also! I figure that you guys would want to keap the headers after you drive with them on, looks like i need to fab these prototypes quicker, not enought to go around....

i need a smilie of a weldor LOL :fliphelmetweldpipe: !

Dude it's cool, I can wait until you get it all figured out. At this point I may have to wait till spring once the weather gets crappy here.

Any plans on making an alternate flange so they can be bolted to an H23 head? I would love a sweet set of headers like that.

PS. dibs on any H23 prototypes

Have you come up with a catchy name for this header yet, or is it just going to be leptoheader?

It definitely looks good and I am anxious to see what kind of numbers the new version will yield. I have been holding out on getting a header and yours looks very promising. Keep up the good work.

HUNGRY
Art and Engineering

Thats my companies name! I took yesterday off from work and figured out what i'll do (along with taking a needed 2 hour nap). Heres the plan:

1- paint v2 header (its too pretty to let rust, even a little and i dont have $ for ceramic coating a prototype)

2- install it on my car, make sure all welds are solid, fit is good and it performs at least as well as the last one.

3- start building v3 (this one will end up a BB1 fit, if Joel wants it), i should be able to whip it out much faster now that i've got the design stabalized and documented (spent 3 hours yesterday writing down all lenghts, angles, stock for the tubes so i can reproduice them faster)

4- pull the v2 header (assuming it doesnt need any work)

5- check the fit of v2 on a BB6 5spd (should be same as SS right?)and BB1.

6- Send v2 to NTPOG for independent dyno/fit testing

8- incorporate and see a laywer about getting some form of good liability protection (always some bastard in the US who wants to sue, especaily after he misses a shift and spays his 75 shot of NOS at the same time, then thinks my header is the reason his cyl#1 exhast valve landed on the moon amd he got a new haircut)...

7- build v4 and final prototype and send it for tooling/production, and start taking orders (need 15 at least).

sound good? suggestions, advice?

ps- heres why i want to paint v2... also, Joel notice the better clearance on v2, due to re-aranged pipes.

HUNGRY header. I like it!!! Everything looks awesome. Keep up the good work.

What do you figure the timeline is till the HUNGRY header goes into production?
