Honda :PUSH TO PASS BUTTON

Here is a button I bet you N/A, power hungry Prelude owners would love to have . Its the Honda PUSH TO PASS BUTTON. When pressed for a limited amount of time, the air/fuel ratio is modified and the engine rev limits is bumped up by about 200rpm to improve the passing potential of this Indy car.

Your 5th gen Prelude has what is in effect the opposite of a push to pass button built into it . To discourage engine operation above the rev limit of 7.4k rpm up to the fuel cut of of 7.7k rpm , your Honda deploys what is refereed to by Honda as a soft limiter to artificially retard any power gains above 7.4k rpms. A responsible and disciplined Prelude owner could develop a method of disabling the soft limiter and realizing the full potential of the engine when run in the 7.4k to 7.7k rpm range for brief periods of time as dictated by some type software. Just like the Indy car driver , if such a soft limiter eliminator was used very sparingly , then probably no long term engine damage would result.

Push to pass blows. IRL drivers used to have the ability to adjust the A/F ratio whenever they wanted to create more power or better fuel economy (4mpg is about the best those cars can get at speed) depending on the driver's strategy. Now they just have that damn button they can push a limited number of times for short bursts of speed.

I've never had any difficulty passing a vehicle I've had to overtake in a stock Prelude.

On the street: If you're bouncing off the rev limiter while trying to pass, you're in too low of a gear, or you're trying to pass a vehicle that's already moving fast enough.

Lets not forget that during the time that you are shifting , the power your sending to the pavement is zip. If for example your Prelude gearing and rev limit is such that you don't have to up shift to 3rd until 65 mph, then the guy that your attempting to pass in the Audi who's gearing and rev limit is such that he must shift to 3rd at 59mph is at a disadvantage because he is basically having to shut his engine down while you power on.Also its not always easy to up shift as your going around a corner. If your mph at the rev limit is such that you don't have to up shift until you have exited the corner then the launch off the corner you get by being in a lower gear may give you the advantage needed to make a pass as you move up the straight section of road.Having more usable revs to work with = more flexibility in more driving situations. With out a doubt that is the number one thing that I liked about my 5th gen lude over the 2nd gen lude I had before.Of coarse inexperienced drivers don't have rev limit problems when cornering because they don't hit the 2nd gear rev limit until long after exiting a corner so whether or not you need the extra revs is somewhat dependent on your driven skills.

Most professional racing leagues have had this for years. Honda was not the inventor of this idea, and every manufacturer has it. F1 has had it forever. Each team implements their own version though, since it's engine and gearing dependent.

No it doesn't.

NO.

There is only one rev limit point. The limit is set to 7800 RPM in the ECU. There is no "retard" of anything before that point, and there's nothing after it, because the ECU will cut fuel delivery. You could drive the car at 7800 RPM all day long, and the car won't "artificially retard" anything.
