engine miss-fire problem

when i turn on the car it revs up then the rpm's go below 1000 and lower and lower until the entire car shakes and/or turns off. apparently the mechanics say that only two out of the four cylinders are spinning and that there is a miss-fire somewhere in the engine. so now i have to have them take the engine apart to find out where the problem is but i don't have the time or the money to do that right now. I'm just wondering if there's anything else that i can check or do without emptying out my wallet.

Are you throwing any CEL codes? It would really help out on figuring out the problem

WOW...two out of the four are spinnning...havent heard that one yet...... MORE INFO... Do you have spark on all four cylinders? CEL on? flashing? Noises? Almost sounds like a coil, rotor, or fuel pump.
