Custom Exhaust System - Resonator Suggestions

Hello all. I am currently in the process of replacing my entire exhaust system. I already purchsed one of the Private Label Mfg "Tri-Y" Headers. This was all brought upon by a damaged downpipe tube in my current header. Also, I don't much care for the look or sound of my current exhaust, so I thought I would replace the whole thing.

In my 97 SH, I currently have a DC Stainless header, Greddy Catback exhaust, and a factory catalytic converter. Since the header was damaged due to a large bump in the road, I am replacing it, and since the new header has a 2.5" collector, I decided to replace the whole thing.

I am going to just have a local muffler shop fit 2.5" stainless piping between all the components I purchase online. I have found the muffler and catalytic converter I think I want. Both are from Magnaflow and a dealer on eBay has them pretty cheap.

Muffler: MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust
Tips: MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust
Cat: Product Search Results - MagnaFlow Catalytic Converters by Car Sound

My main question is:

Should I get a resonator or just fill in with 2.5" stainless pipe between the catalytic converter and muffler? I know most "bolt-on" systems include a resonator section, and most people have included one in their "custom" systems, but is it really necessary?

Any input/feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

A resonator isn't a must, but with just the muffler to quiet down the exhaust it will be pretty loud. I have one resonator on my custom exhaust setup and I intend to add another one this summer to quiet it down some more.

The resonator will also deepen the sound of the exhaust, I would HIGHLY recommend you get one if it is a street car.

Anyone have any suggestions of what would be a good resonator to get? I haven't looked too much, but I did a brief search for 2.5" exhaust resonator and found this one. It looks pretty standard compared to what you would see in a bolt-on cat back system.

Stainless Steel Exhaust Resonator High Flow 2.5x18 - Vibrant Performance 1793

Not sure about these. It looks like they are supposed to be used as a muffler application, but it might work as a resonator and make things even quieter? Not sure if they would fit though.

Just use a magnaflow "round" muffler as a resonator. The longer it is the deeper/quieter your exhaust will be.

Okay thanks for the suggestion. I guess I was concerned about doing that because I didn't know if that would work the same as one advertised as a resonator. Also, I wasn't sure about the size and restricted amount of space. I see that they have 4" round mufflers that would probably work. I am going to measure the resonator section on my Greddy exhaust to see how big it is in diameter to make sure the one I use will fit. Thanks again for the help.

I used a generic 2.5" resonator that the exhaust shop stocked. I had him flip it so that the fins pointed backwards and used an ordinary TurboII muffler. No status performance parts but it ended up really quiet and made good power. Good luck!!

Okay cool. Thanks for the help. Unfortunately my exhaust build is going to be put on hold for a little while. I have been having a mysterious disappearance of coolant for a little while and have had to keep refilling it. I did a compression test today and realized that my head gasket is going to need to be replaced when we were showered with coolant. 2 of my cylinders are leaking coolant. I just had this motor rebuilt a year ago, but this problem has developed since them. I am going to start a discussion about it separately for anyone interested. Thanks.

I'm using two of the Vibrant 3" diameter resonators back-to-back. I had them welded together to create one long section of strictly resonators. I believe I have the 18" length ones, so 36" of resonator
