biulding a race lude

ok so im continuing from the h23 stroker? thread

im no longer considering stroking but definently rebiulding my h23 or possibly swapping to an h22 and biulding that

either way its getting ITB's

i plan on spending about 4k-5k on the head and about 4k-5k on the bottom end and i have a pretty good idea of what id like to do but if i can somehow spend less thatd be awsome!
and ANY HELPFUL information is ALWAYS appreciated!

all information on what would be best to use while keeping it realistic and within the price range would be awsome

suspension im still a little unsure about and i would really like to know what the best and most versatile suspension is for an autocross and road race specific car while keepin it realistic so no insane 15k$ suspension setups lol

transmission work i have barely looked into so ne information whatsoever would be great on that

and of course any ideas for weight reduction or sources for carbon fiber or fiberglass doors and other parts that are typically hard to find

thanks bunches!

I still think you are thinking too much about modifying to make a race car than actually racing it.

you can easily race a stock prelude and be somewhat competitive. the more you put on, the more you are going to realize it pushes you up into a very bad class (for you).

just like ken said, you aren't going to like this but driving experience > modifying at our level.

if you have ever ridden in a spec miata (basically stock almost), you would be amazed. I would even go out on a limb and say slightly modified preludes could beat you on a real track. (i personally know 2 race preludes/drivers) both don't even have crazy engine work that you are contemplating.

just a fyi

yea i suppose ur right but i would like to at least rebiuld the motor and get a lil head work done and DEFINENTLY suspension cuz mine is straight crap haha

and i do agree that stock preludes are competitive before my springs started to sag i was beating out gsr tegs with coilovers i even beat out an audi s4.... no idea how or why that car shoulda kicked my ass, jus more evidence for bein a better driver a suppose

so say for right now we throw out the idea of a cage and a 10k$ motor biuld

and say about 4k on the motor alltogether? or would i be better off jus swapping in a jdm h23vtec and jus doin some bolt ons?
and about 2k into suspension

and gutting the car cuz either way the class im in right now im barely in so ne mod i do im movin up a class

i already have strut tower bars but im thinkin bout makin my own that go to the firewall and the struts for some extra rigidity

would u think that would be a better investment for the right now weekend warrior?

i mean technically i could still drive it to the track at least if i kept a license on it but im def dropping the insurance then i wouldnt have to haul it on the truck

ooo an new question i started thinkin about around 4 minutes ago..

how much modification would i need to run race fuel? do i jus need a good ignition system? or is there more i should be lookin into for that? (ex. higher compression) i never really looked into it

and im still thinkin bout ITB's jus cuz iv never seen an h23 with them an i like to be different haha

im definently gonna look into some driving schools though this summer

but then this goes back to the question noone has yet answered
what kind of suspension do u recomend? tein? skunk2? kyb? somethin else?

what should i build my bottom end with if i keep the stock h23? im lookin for rods, pistons, rings, and sleeves i can do machining myself so thats not a factor

and for the head should i jus get some better valve springs, retainers and a cam? or no cam

and i am plannin on using chrome the tuning and install is very cheap for me so dont wry about that

i no its a big start but i dont think the car is really that reliable right now an i want it to be strong, and not be underpowered nemore

Maybe you have done this already, but I would take a look at some of the high power motor builds in the N/A library. That will give you some idea of what power targets you can hit for certain mods.

Honestly, building an engine is a complicated subject. H22s seem to be very picky, and I've seen a lot of cases where motors don't make as much power as they "should". It happened to me when I was modifying mine, so it can be very frustrating.

For a track car, I would prioritize the suspension. I prefer Konis over everything else. I'm not a fan of any of the JDM coilovers; they are too stiff for most spring rates. A lot of your budget will get eaten up by wear items, especially brake pads, rotors, tires, and fluids. You will also need to spend time tuning the suspension system on-course to get the most kick. Back when I had my Prelude, I left a lot of competitiveness on the table because I didn't take the time to tune my coilovers and sway bar.

awsome thats what i was lookin for

ill def look into konis

and i have also seen many cars not making the power they should have but usually it was the result of lazy tuning the more time u spend tuning the better off ull be is what iv gathered so far

thanks!

and yea im already saving for tires, brakes, fluids an all of that brakes and suspension are the first to get changed

i already have rotas with heat cycled falken rt-615's an im lookin into the nitto nt01's but will prolly stick with the falkens there working out pretty well so far

ok for suspension i would say tokico illunina shocks with shunk2 coilovers. then i would get upper front and rear strut bars that should only be 1k give or take 100 depending where you order from.

For a track car, I would still recommend what Ken said, Koni's. They're adjustable and rebuildable to almost any spec. This will do wonders down the line if and when he wants to upgrade. There is also more support for Koni's as well.
