i was on honda-tech and found out that one guy made some balance shaft plugs.. does anybody know where i can find myself a set.. i e-mailed the guy but he hasn't gotten back to me yet
I was looking for this 'kit' as well a while ago. I'm putting my motor together yesterday and the next couple days so I gotta know if I can get/make these or not.
It depends. The plugs need to be an exact interference fit. Too big, and they'll damage the oil pump. Too small, and they'll come out when the engine gets up to operating temp.
hey 71dsp... your mail box is full.. but i would very much like to buy a set.. also... do you own a machine shop ?
i want a reputable place to order my bearings from (main and con-rod) when i put together my engine.. i don't have the measurments right now but i'll have them by the end of feb
or if you got them elsewhere.. where did you pick up the bearings from?
I don't own a machine shop, but I have a lathe in my garage. Hopefully a mill as well, one of these days. The plugs are a very basic shape, so they're very easy to make.
As for the bearings, just order them from Honda. I wouldn't use anything other than Honda bearings, myself.
I bought the same ones from him and they being put on the motor now. I'll let you know how they work when I get the car back next week.

when you guys re-built your motors.. was it easier to just buy the crank and bearing set as an entire assembly.. or measure out everything and get the bearings seperately..from what i can see on teh crank.. it looks to be in good condition...no scratches on teh surface.. but like i said.. is it better to just buy the package deal with bearings already measured out for the crank?
There are THREE (3) oil passages on the oil pump that you will have to drill, tap, & plug (3/8 NPT plugs) to use the balancer shaft plugs mentioned above.
Be aware of this, it's not just a "press in and go" ordeal.
when you install the plugs, you have to plug the oil passages that lead to the bearings for the balance shafts because there's no shaft there to produce oil pressure, therefor your oil pressure will drop dramatically. You can plug them several ways... like someone mentioned you can literally plug the holes, or you can 'spin' the shaft bearings 180 deg. to plug them but it's not as simple as just turning them around, you have to have the bearings pressed in and out, it sucks.
Sounds like alot of work. What are the disadvantages to removing ONLY the belts...rather than removing the shafts and using the plugs? I'm not that familiar with this
if i wasn't re-building the entire engine i might take off the belt.. but at school they have bearing driver tools.. and so i will be doing it by turning the bearings 180 degrees...
man.. i thought the guy was talkign about drilling the actual oil pump.. i was like.. fudge.. that was the first time i heard of that
