Air Filter Question

Hey, sorry if this is the wrong section, and if it's been answered before (i searched air filter and didn't find anything helpful).

Anyways, I was cleaning out my engine yesterday and noticed that my air filter is extremely dirty. I don't really know anything about air filters/air intake (or cars in general for that matter). I have an aftermarket Injen air intake...owner before me bought it. My question is what would be a good air filter to buy? Like I said I don't know anything about it...are there different sizes? can I buy filters seperately from the intake(i'm assuming yes)? is there a major difference between air filters? can I help gas milage?

Sorry for the noob questions, but I've seen that air filters affect mpg and with gas as expensive as it is right now, I don't want to pass up such a simple opportunity to increase my gas milage, even a little bit.

Thanks,
EB

you can try K&N filters, they are always good. you can even try to clean your current one.

^ some have said that the oil in the K&N filters isn't good for sensors. I'm not sure of how factual this is. I have been running one for maybe 6k miles and haven't noticed any adverse effects. I'd do some searching if it worries you.

^yeah don't get the oil ones. Get the new dry foam K&N ones.

It might not make much of a difference on preludes but on s52 motors, ppl with the oiled filters have ruined their MAFs.

I watch my mpg every tank and haven't found it to have made a difference. Good or bad.

AEM and K&N are both getting away from oiled filter due to the ability to ruin sensors. They each now have dry flow filters that can be cleaned.

Alright, thanks for the help everyone.

I think I'm gonna try cleaning mine for now, see how that works. Any tips for cleaning, or is it just straightforward.
