4-1 header done

Hi NA crew,

First verion of my 4 into 1 headers are done, got bolted on the lude tonight and driven. Rember my posts on design?

lepto's custom header project #1

Its hard to count all of the hours, sweat, blood, tears and cash ive put into this project, but when i put the throttle down for the first time it was all 's. Pulls nice. Enough talk:

I could talk alot about the design, pipes equal length (realy), nice long collector, is only 15lbs (i checked), engine does not need removal for install (thanks to the CNC'ed flanges i designed, and used RP to do fit tests). bla bla bla, but im too tierd right now.

Next im going to try to take it down to the NTPOG guys (Todd) and put it on the dyno. Then i'll probably make some revisions, then have it Jet-hotted and THEN i'll beging looking into making this a comercial product. I dont have the means to manufacture these at home, so I'll have to look into other options. This was a real chalange to actualy get this done (considering the tools, time and $ i had for it). If it does make it to comercial sale, im going ot fight tooth and nail to keap the price as low as possible.

Time for a beer.

Nice good job man!

Are the welds pretty fluid?
Is the inside of the piping smooth?

Did you have to cut the front crossmember? The 1st version of the SMSP header looked like that, and Corey had to cut a notch in his.
Also, have you/will you do a baseline of the stock header on your car?

Thanks guys, glad you like it.

Drove it again tonight and it felt nice. Even my wife noticed the added power... so i know im putting more power down if i pass that test I cant wait to get the 2.5" cat (thanks Ray) on tomarow.

The welds may be ugly (all i have is a flux-cored mig box) but they are solid and clean on the inside. If we get to selling these they'll be professioanly done (i know how to weld but am not a pro..). The header fits with no modification as is, but im going to redesign the mid flange to allow even more clearance.

glad you like the HELLA horns Ray, gotta watch out for the SUVs around Detroit.....

Looks great man...I'm very interested...can you give the measure ments of the external and internal diameters?

And if you are going to dyno...PLEASE get numbers to isolate the header.

Heh..if you want to send it up to me I can give you back to back GReddy vs. your header on my fully built motor

Hey man! Nice job!!
I'm actually in the middle(well, not in the middle, but I am actually going through the steps on designing one) of making a header for my car (a 3g, however).
I wanted to ask you 2 questions:
1. How did you match up the exhaust ports and the very begginning of the header? On the B20 at least the exhaust ports are very elliptic. Did you just use a large pipe and crush it so it fit the shape? Or did you use a circular pipe large enough to cover the whole port? I've been thinking that to get the best match, I would fit the pipe roughly, and then i could fill it in a bit and then port it out with a dremel (VERY time consuming I know, but I think it would make the best flow).

2. Where did you get the flex pipe, and roughly how much is it?

I hope mine turns out as well as yours!

LOL, yeah it is. I had 2 version of the flex made byKinrom. They were realy great and made 5 custom flex sections for me, got them in 2 weeks from the middle of the Middle Kingdom!

as for the flanges.... i do alot of CAD type work so i used those tools (along with purge prints from the RP machine at work). The method i would suggest is to:

get exh. manifold gasket from Honda, trace it on steel plate, then do some plasme cutting.... then LOTS of grinding, then drilling, then with a vise and a rose bud tip on a OxyAcet torch form the pipe leads to the ports (which should match up of all of the previous proccesses were exact enough.... CNC work is expensive, but it sure beats doing flanges by hand (i did it both ways).

good luck with the B20 header (but why not go for a turbo manifold on that hunky b20 block...?).

Satan..... ill tell you the pipe sizes and lengths when Dave from SMSP does... Ill give you my soc# and visa expiration data on the same day too.... Just kidding, but realy, until i get farther along with the comercial end of it i'll keap quiet about that. I also did about 4 months of reading and lots of talkling with engineers to plan the design (wich is only just a start...).

Thanks agian guys! going to get the cat put on tomarow, hard to finda a good garage around punk-ass-ann-arbor-michigan... every one drives lexus and BMW around here, not to many "hands on, BS off" type buisnesses.......

lookin good...can't wait to see the dyno....it sounds like it'll definitely get better gains than a DC I want it to have better gains than the mugen

it'd be great if you can get a dyno of just the header....or at least get a baseline first if you have other mods

Yeah, down at tech I have VERY limited, but free (i.e. no cost) access to a CNC machine. I already have the gasket for making the flange. The big thing I had trouble coming up with until just recently was the cam events timing for my car, but now that I have that I can start a little more work.

I'm not doing the turbo because:
A) I flat out don't have the money to do it. (I do have the money to slowly sink into this header design)
B) STS rules don't allow it.

I like your way of matching up the primaries to the flange. Thanks for that!!

Again, if you dyno, make sure you isolate the header, I don't want to see header + test pipe. If so run the test pipe with the stock header first.

DOnt use a stock cat. Use a test pipe, but yeah do a stock header in combo with a testpipe first for base line measurements.
