Writeup: 5th Gen micron A/C filter replacement instructions

These are instructions for the 5th gen (99+ only) micron air filter replacement. These instructions and photos are copyright NTPOG, PreludeOnline, and me (Cruxader). Thanks to Tenzola for helping me with this.

For this you will need the following items:
#1 Philips screwdriver
10mm socket and socket wrench
(2) micron air filters (Honda Part # 80291-S30-901, go to hparts.com to order)
Knife or Box Cutter strong and sharp enough to cut plastic

Step 1: Open your glove compartment and take everything out.

Step 2: Remove the two stoppers preventing the glove compartment from falling all the way down. These are located on each side, and can be removed by pressing on the clips shown in A (picture below) then pushing in (towards the interior of the glove box).

Step 3: Remove the screw holding the rail shown in B (picture above), and pull rail so it no longer holds the glove box anymore.

Step 4: Let the glove box drop all the way down. Remove the two screws circled below. Glove box should be completely removed now.

Step 5: Remove the two bolts (circled below) holding the metal bar in place.

Step 6: The metal bar is actually held in place by a plastic bar behind it (see picture below). Remove the metal bar by pulling off the plastic bar. Take the box cutter or knife and cut at the sections located in the green boxes to remove the middle section of the plastic bar. Be careful to leave the tabs that hold up the metal bar on the side intact. Discard the plastic bar cut out.

Step 7: Now remove the plastic strap holding the black plastic filter box shown in the picture below together. The clip is at the bottom where the arrow is. Pull down, pull out, and remove.

Step 8: The filter box should now look like the picture below. Notice the two white tabs. Take hold of the lower white tab and pull straight out towards you. That is the bottom filter. Now grab hold of the top white tab, pull down so the side of the filter frame is completely exposed (as the lower one was). Just as before, pull straight out towards you.

Step 9: The filter box should look like the picture shown below now.

Step 10: The two filters (with frame) should look like those shown below. Push the filters out in the direction of the arrow (opposite the direction of the airflow).

Step 11: The filter should be out of the frame shown like the picture below. Put the new filters in, careful to note the direction of the airflow.

Step 12: Put everything back in reverse order.

Hope this helps.

Nice writeup! When do you recommend changing the filters...is it at a certain mileage point, or age?

i'd recommend 35K miles for dusty conditions, maybe 50K for cleaner areas.

cool write up

but... it looks like us 97&98 owners will just have to wear dust mask to get the same protection that you new prelude owners got.
hahaha

anyways, i'm sure the filter isn't necessary considering most of the car out there don't have them.
however, it's nice to know it's there.
my guess is that it probably helps dust from getting into your interior.
