SuperFlea's detailed "make the sidemarkers blink" mod write-up...

Here are my instructions are making your sidemarkers blink. With this mod, your sidemarkers will blink with your turn signals when parking lights\headlights are OFF. If your parking\headlights are on, then they will blink interchangably (ie, sidemarker on while turn signal off, sidemarker off, while turn signal on).

Before we start, make sure you unscrew your sidemarkers, and just let the bulb hang inside the bumper.

Tools you will need:

10mm head to remove bolts
Philip head screw driver
Electrical tape
Scissors
Knife\wire stripper

Here we go:

Step 1: remove grill --

Remove the grill with the prelude logo on it. Remove the two bolts on the ends of it (10mm). Next, using a flat head screwdriver, pop up the tabs that hold the grill to the frame of the car, so you can pull those out (there will be three of these -- two against the frame, and one in the center connected to the bumper).

Step 2: Unbolt\unscrew bumper --

There will be 3 bolts(maybe more? I forgot...) (also 10mm, like before) underneath the car that secure the bumper and black covering to the rest of the car. There's one in the center, and one on either side of it, spaced about 12inches apart. Removed those 3 (or more) bolts. Next, near each fender well, where the bumper meets the side fenders, there will be a screw (philip head) that you need to remove. After removing those two screws, and the bolts underneath, the bumper is ready to come off.

Now, to remove the bumper, you'll want to do this one side at a time. Take a look at how the bumper is held onto the frame of the car\fender area. What you want to do is, pull out to the side, and towards the front of the car until the side pops out some. Do that on the other side as well. Then go back to the first side you worked on, and pull it all the way, until the bumper starts to come off. This will help if you have one extra person to pull the other side at the same time. Now, don't pull it too far (you need to remove your bulb housing from the turn signals, so they don't pull).

Step 3: wiring --

Now that the bumper is off, you can see the wires that lead to both the turn signals, and the sidemarkers. There will be a black soft plastic piece covering the wires to the sidemarkers. Cut the whole thing off, so you can expose the wires. You'll also want to do this for the turn signals.

For the sidemarkers, you should see 2 wires (one black, and one red). The black wire is what we want to cut. You'll want to cut it so you have 95% of the wire length coming from the end that's connected to the bulb. Leave just a little bit of the black wire still coming out of the other end, so if you ever needed to reconnect it for some reason, you could. With the wire cut, you'll want to strip away some of the black, so you can get the actual copper wire to show. You'll want about 1cm of copper showing.

For the turn signals, you should also see 2 wires (one black, and one another color). We don’t want to cut either of these wires, but we DO want to splice into the POWER wire (the colored one) of the turn signal. Take a knife, and slowly slice away at part of the wire, so you can expose the copper. NOTE: You'll want to do this to as CLOSE as you can to where the sidemarker wires connect to. If you don't, you won't have enough slack to be able to put the bulb back into the sidemarker.

Now that you've cut the sidemarker black wire, and you've spliced an opening in the power wire of the turn signal, just touch the sidemarker wire to the turn signal wire, and hold it there while you have someone turn on your parking lights. The sidemarker should come on. With you still holding the wires in place, have them turn the hazzards on, so the lights will blink. The sidemarker and turn signal should blink interchangably. If things are good to go, secure the wires together as best you can, and cover it up REALLY well with electrical tape.

Repeat the process for the other side.

Step 4: Check connections, and reinstall bumper --

Make sure all connections are secure, and that all bulbs\signals are working properly before you put the bumper back on.

Move the bumper up to the car, and pop your turn signal bulbs back in. Also, slide your sidemarker bulbs through the hole, and hold it there while you install the bumper, so the bulb won't be stuck back there, without you not being able to get to it

Bolt the bumper back up, the grill, and you're done!

I hope the instructions are useable for you. I'm sure you'll be able to do it with no problem. Good luck! And hope all goes well!

------ if this all sounds complicated, it isnt. Basic idea is -- connect the ground wire (black) from the sidemarker bulb to the power wire (red or green) of the turn signal. -------

Since this topic has come up quite a bit, and people have been messaging me, I thought I'd post the instructions that I wrote up for a friend. Good luck! It's a very simple, but cool modification!

mods - maybe this is worth FAQ'ing

I'm a little confused at why you are taking the bumper off though. The holes for the turns and the fogs is plenty big enough to do any rewiring. Oh and I suggest using those quick connect connectors for the actual splicing. All you do is lay the one cable you are splicing into into one side of the quick connect and then lay the other cable next to it. When you clamp down it will splice into both. It's much cleaner and more likely to stay together than twisting or other methods.

Oh and you might need some electrical wire to make you life much simpler (and perhaps some connectors). Not sure the guage but green works well (they color coded the guages).

I just feel that it's easier to take the bumper off, because it gives you maximum room, instead of having to peer through the sidemarker hole\front turn signal hole.

It's up to the person performing the mod. If they can do it without bumper removal, then great. But this is the method I took because it gives me the most freedom.

I'm just terrified of using too much force and breaking the damn thing. It's like taking off the dash inside - give me a dozen screws any day than these silly clips Honda uses (which I've broken as well )

This is stupid

Who would want to modify their lights? Leave them as is. Just keep your stock bulbs and stock wiring. Man! Whast this rice? People coming up with it left and right.

I wanna mod my sidemarkers, not just from a style standpoint, but a safety issue. Think about it that on 5th gens, when you use your turn signals, if they were looking at the car from the side, they wouldn't know that you are signalling.

Good write up, Justin!

Thanks, James. I'm glad someone appreciates it.

and just to add, the whole reason for doing this is just as Jaques mentioned -- to allow people from the side to see that you are signaling.
