ATTN: ODL (or others that painted calipers)

Hey ODL, i mentioned something in the SoCal thread but i just brought it out here so its easier for you to see. But can you send those pics of you painting your calipers? Also, what kind of paint and stuff should i use/stay away from? Clear coat necessary? Im doing it this weekend, and just want to make sure i get the right stuff and do it right

Let's see if this attach feature really works
Otherwise...i NEED YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.

Anyways, i used VHT caliper paint and VHT hi temp clear coat from summit racing.

7 light coats of paint, then 3 light coats of clearcoat. Before you start make sure you calipers are SPIC AND SPAN clean! otherwise the paint won't stick. Use a degreaser, scrub with toothbrush...and use dishwashing soap...scrub again. Repeat. Then apply paint.

You can protect your body by lots of newspaper....you can see in my pic kinda how i did it. I know this is a short post, and not all that thorough (hey, it's late). If you have any q's...just ask.

i just used some engine enamel... like $4/can at PepBoys. 3 coats of blue + 2 clearcoats...

i just sprayed a lot of Brakleen on the calipers before painting them, too lazy to scrub them or whatever

don't worry about doing it perfectly, they'll get scratched very soon anyway

Me too! No big deal to me really, the next time (which will be soon) I change the pads I'm going to paint the calipers again and the pads will be out so there :finger:

Hey while on the subject does anyone know if they make a DEEP red hi-temp paint? I mean like blood red similar to the red on the JDM emblems? I used a red that looked pretty dark until I got my emblem and now it doesn't even come close. I think I used Ford red or something. Anyone??????

Sure See, it's going to be a while though because that b1tch still hasn't made it into the shop yet. Supposedly the inner quater panel is on back order and no one seems to know when it'll be in.

So whats the difference between the hi-temp paint and the engine enamel paint? Is one better than the other?

Just take them off and paint it. Just remember to get rid of the bubbles when you reconnect the brake lines.

00vteclude...engine enamel is a type of hitemp paint. I used the VHT one b/c it says on the can all this crap of being 'specially formulated to resist brake cleaner and blah blah blah'...whatever. Both'll work fine.

Here's a pic of my red ones...they're kinda blood red...i like

And o0OO0o...mine are pretty noticeable. It's cool when you see people staring at them on the freeway

did u guys leave all the brakes together on your car, or did u have to disassemble everything? if you left everything as is what parts did u cover and what did u cover it with to avoid overspray (newspaper?)....and did u have any problems with the paint running onto the rotors?

TIA

i just left the whole thing on... i covered the brake rotors, the suspension stuff, the front fender and part of the door using newspaper and masking tape... and i also put newspaper on the ground so that i wouldn't leave blue spots on my garage's floor

i see that ODL painted just the outer half of the caliper, i painted the whole thing.

be careful when you're putting the wheels back on after you're done, i scratched one of my calipers right away

i know ODL painted with it on the car cuz i can kinda remember his pics. Im just going to cover the whole side of the car with newspaper to prevent any overspray just to be safe. Hopefully I can get the pics with whats covered up and whats not
