Name brands but no Hankook? Does that mean no Falken either? Is a "name brand" nothing more than a good-ol-boy tire company like goodyear, michelin, bfgoodrich and bridgestone/firestone to you?
I had the BFgoodrich TA KDW g-force on my car and felt they were adequate enough, but when they lost traction, they really lost it, there was no in between.
Then I put Falken R-615s on and I feel they are worlds apart and a wonderful tire. However, they might not be the best DD tire out there.
There is a tire I've experienced a limited amount of time on (on a Mazda3s) and that was the Hankook Ventus R-2s 212's. Wow! They were a great blend of drivability, long lasting (because I knew the owner had them on for a long time and the tread held up very nicely) and great performance. I found a favorable review on a miata tire forum that sums it up nicely as to what I believe is the tire's best trait...
I bought these at America's Tire Memorial Day weekend. Since then I've put 3000 miles on them. 50% of my driving is on the freeway with the remainder mountain and back roads. These tires are very quite. They do not hunt around on freeway grooves. Turn in is quick (tires currently at 32 psi.) with no squeeling. Lots of grip on twisty roads even when pushed. Good grip in the rain. Will by again!!
And one last selling point... the tire is very attractive. You will definitely get alot of looks if you go out to shows where you park your car (not saying that is the intent of buying a tire, but you know...)
