It's recommended if your tires are at 5/32's to get them replaced because they wont last through winter. Hydroplaning increases etc etc. And about 90% of tire issues are from the last 10% of your tread depth. Also, it's the standard to put new tires on the rear for safety. The only exception is when the front and rear sets of tires are within 2/32's of each other. The reason why new tires should be put on the rear is it reduces the chances of your car hydroplaning (rain and ice) and putting your self in an over-steer situation. Over-steer can be very dangerous because it's very uncontrollable and the driver may not realize it until it's too late. Also, sometimes (but not always) tires are constructed with a "dry" tread block design on the outside section on the tread area, so even in dry conditions it could be very dangerous. Remember that all thread depth measurements should be made on the LOWEST AREA OF DEPTH! Replacement is highly recommend. I hope this answers your questions.
