5th gen wheel offset question

Anybody running 17x7" wheels with a +40 offset?

If my understanding of wheel offsets is correct, those wheels won't stick out any further than my 18x7.5" wheels with a +42 offset, right? My logic is that the 17's will stick out 2mm further, but since they are .5" (12.7mm) skinnier, the wheel will actually not stick out quite as far as my 18's (17's will be about 10mm closer to the centerline of the car). Does that make sense?

I've found some used wheels for sale in this size/offset that are a half day drive for me to just test fit, so any input would be great. I really don't want to drive all day just to find out the wheels won't work. They have 215/45/17 tires on them as well, but they are cheap ****ty tires so I can run smaller tires if need be.
