5th gen Rims!

Hi, i have a 97 prelude with the stock rims for now! i was looking for 17s but i dont understand what all the measurements and offsets have to be!
I have a new set a tires in my garage that are 205/40zr17 80w and i was wondering if there is a certain size of rim i need or any 17 inch rim approved for radials(17x7 or 17x8) will fit these? and what does the 205/40, 80w, and 17x7or8 mean?
Thanks for your help!

check out the wheel/tire forum. there are two stickied threads that will provide you with enough info to make an informed decision.

Depends on the offset of the wheels and the size of the tire.

well i have tires that are 205/40zr17 but they might be too small? the rims are supposed to be fresh off a 5th gen prelude so they are the perfect offset.

205 is probably okay with 7" but is probably a little to thin for 8". 8" isnt recommended on our cars anyway.

If i go from 16's to 17's does the speedo need to be adjusted? i heard is the you increase the diameter, the speedo reads incorrectly!

no.. if you use the 205/40 you stated earlier, the smaller profile will make up the difference of the 1 inch increase in rim size, therefore the overall diameter will be near stock spec.

i'm bored as hell at work so i look forward to your next series of questions.

LOL! thats pretty much it! So the tires i have are only good for 17x7 or 17x7.5, not 17x8 but 17x8's will probly rub anyway?

8 will most likely rub if you haven't modified the wheel well. i.e. trimming the bumper tab. I have 18x7.5 225/40/18 and it only rubs if i'm riding with a fatass. or cornering extremely hard. i would go with 7" if you plan on using those tires.

did you have to adjust the speedo with your rims or is it correct?

I didnt't quite understand your last post but heres some facts;

prelude stock wheel is 16x6.5 ;

stock tire is 205/50/16.

since the tires you have are 205 then you should should stay with a rim width close to stock.

if you tried to put 205 on a 8" wide wheel, the lip of the rim would probably stick out more than the tire does. get it now?

Basically, if you're going to keep with 205/40/17, don't go withe the 8" wheel unless you want it stretched. Most people go with 215/40/17 for their 17's to keep it as close to stock overall diameter as possible. 205/40 will be too short and read faster than you're actually going (not sure if it'll be noticeable though)
