215/40/17 or 215/45/17?

Ok,

I've got new rims coming this spring and was wondering what would be the better for the following rim specs:

Size 17" width 7" offset +50

Would you go with 215/40/17 or 215/45/17 and why? From what I have read it seems 215/40/17 would look better, while 215/45/17 may give a little more protection to the rim, at the expense of not looking as nice.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

There will be a difference in overall tire diameter...

The stiffness of the sidewall will tell more about how well the tire will protect the rim under hard cornering.

In the sticky the recomended tire size is 215/40 for 17" wheels.
The 215/45's will cause you to be going faster that your speedometer will say because the diameter will be somewhat larger.

Oh yeah, I remember reading about the speedo issues too. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with Toyo T1R. Hopefully the T1R sidewall is a little siffer than the T1S I had before.

I went with the 40 series tires since they look better...nowadays I want a profile of 35 =X. Anyway, there are tires out there that have a rim protector, so it'd be ok to go with a lower profile tire.

I ran 215/45/17 on my 5th gen and had inner and outer rub. With 215/40/17 I'm getting no rub that I am aware of, maybe only on large bumps.

Really? These rims are actually the Mugen MZ3x's. I dont recall anyone having to use spacers using 215 40 17. Unless I copied the specs wrong.
