Back on June 28th, my wife and I had some friends come visit us for the weekend. One of the attractions they wanted to see was Pikes Peak (elevation 14,110ft). There are 3 ways to get to the top of the mountain, you can hike a trail, you can drive up (~$35 a car) or you can take the cog railroad up. We elected to take the cog railroad up. Little did we know before we stepped on it, but the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) was happening that day. The tour guide on the way up advised everyone to stay away from the summit's parking lot because the cars would be coming up at fast speeds. Well screw that, I was going to go see where all the action was!
So when the train reached the top, my wife and friends began to go inside of the restaurant/gift shop at the top, but I took off to the parking lot. There were alot of camera crews and news teams at the top, so I walked over to a photographer and asked him where all the cars were. He said they were expecting them any minute. Then he pointed to a car and said "did you ever watch any of those fast and furious movies? Paul Walker is over in that car over there." And he pointed to a white Porsche. We started to walk over to it and somebody was rummaging around in the back seat, but then sure enough, Paul Walker stepped out. 3 or 4 camera crews came running over and started pumping him for questions. I got some photos in, but then I decided to run back to the building and get my wife and friends. They didn't believe me when I told them, but then they came running out too and we all stood around and waited for pictures. I've not had any other interactions with celebrities outside of Jay Leno (at the Henry Ford Museum) and Gene Simmons' Son at the Memphis airport. But for what I know, he was pretty cool. He talked to anyone that wanted to talk with him and he didn't have any kind of body guards. He even went to pee in the public restrooms just like everyone else, haha. So here are some pictures I got...
My Friend Ramon got a picture too
Then the cars began coming up. The first car to crest the summit was, surprisingly, a Honda Fit.
I guess you can still have stock drum brakes since you only need to worry about going up the Mountain, not down...
Then the second car up, oddly enough, was a Nissan Leaf. I have seen in the most recent issues of Car & Driver/Road and Track, etc, that Nissan is advertising this car as one that could make it up the mountain. Interesting....
Third car up, not sure what this was...
Last car I witnessed coming up... Not sure what it was, but I did notice that after that, a steady stream of old muscle cars were the next ones to come up. I was unaware as to how open this race was.
Last picture before I left, I saw this guy walking towards the building, but I didn't know who he was. Does he look like anyone famous?
