PJizle 97' Base Progression Thread

Hi Everyone

The name's PJ. I've been on this board for about a year, mainly in the background reading and getting some information. Exactly one year ago this month, I bought my first car, a 1997 Base Nordic Mist Silver Prelude. I purchased her from a used car dealership (I know, ). After several ups and downs it seems she's finally getting what she deserves so I thought I'd start a little progression thread.

This is what she looked like when I picked her up. 100% stock base. I should've realized something was wrong when the rims are running away from each other.

After one week, I couldn't take it no more. I had to purchase new wheels and with the little money I had I picked up some Drag Rims. Opening these "shoes" felt like Christmas but one year later I am somewhat bored of them so I will be upgrading shortly (knock on wood) to some 5Zigen FN01 or Volk Rims.

Now this was the new look.

Unfortunately, a month later I got into a little fender bender. With the help of my father we fixed the dent but I've been driving with primered fender for a little over 6 months now. To add to that, we attempted to repair the rust but it was a little to late (October) and we got caught in the rain. In the little time we had we realized that the wheel arches where nearly destroyed. The arch would literally crumble in our hands when grabbing them. We did our best with that and then tried to fix the keyhole on the trunk that also had quite a bit of rust.

Purchased a nice birthday gift for myself in November. Infinity sound system (minus Sub) with a beautiful little Pioneer dash.

Now May 09' the big change is coming. After almost 3 months of having the car, the H22A started knocking . That wasn't the only problem however. The paint was chipping from rocks, rust was getting pretty bad because of Canadian winters, the Window trim looked like ****, the Windows were squealing and one barely will go down anymore and the wheel arches where falling apart.

Luckily it lasted until now, but it is time for a rebuild. I sadly don't have the money to have the work done so I thought it would be a great learning experience to do this with my dad. In the end he did transform this:

Mustang (Donor similar to but Not THIS exact car)

Into this beautiful AC Cobra:

so I think/hope I can trust him . So the plans for this month include Engine rebuild (OEM with minor upgrades such as AEM intake, Greddy SP2 Exhaust system for now). I'm also repainting the car (same color), finally getting my long awaited coil-over setup (Tokico Illuminas + Ground Controls), painting the base skirts same color as the car so they look clean and obviously I'm finally repairing all that rust.

Here's what my father and I have accomplished to date. Forgive the low quality iPhone pics.

Stripped the doors to get to the rust underneath and fix the window mechanics.

Pulled off the bumpers and skirts. Sand + Repaint.

A little progress on the engine. More to come in the next couple days.

If you managed to stay interested until now, I appreciate it . I'm a big fan of the cars I see here and the love that's been put into them. I've often felt I should've just sold this car and buy a new one but I'm going to stick it out with this lude despite the wrong doing her previous owner did. I'm hoping to hear feedback and criticism always. Hopefully by the end of the summer it'll look something like this masterpiece.

Do you actually know anything about the notchback, or is it just a pic you found?

Thanks for the comments everyone! Much appreciated.

I've gotta shout out to prepreludesh, VTi BB8 behind the unbeleivable marine blue (now white) prelude, and the old Mcnaab progression thread for inspiration and the devotion to stick through it and hopefully have a great end result

So we woke up at 9 this morning. Was cold as hell in Montreal today, about 9 Degrees Celsius.

The picture of the engine bay in the first post is how it looked when we woke up. About an hour later my dad and I had all the bolts off (except for one :@)

It was getting stuck somewhere and we couldn't figure it out (were doing this without the helms manual). After tugging at it back and forth up and down, my dad went under the car and found that there was one tiny bolt he hadn't seen that was still holding the exhaust to the engine. Once that was off it was ready to come out.

Keeping it ghetto with the old swing-set ropes.

This is is what was left over. Dirt + Grease + The wonderful Rust of a Canadian car[Yummmmm].

Obviously gave it a nice pressure wash and it looked much better. I'm going to start pulling off parts, sanding them and painting them black to keep an overall clean look. Should start on the headers on Tuesday.

Finally, we put the engine up on a stand [This is also pre-pressure wash]. Took off the tranny, driveshaft, clutch..etc. Turns out I'll be needing a new clutch kit.

My uncle will be passing by tomorrow. He's a mechanic so he'll be able to diagnose exactly what's wrong with my H22A. The knocking needs to be explained and although Lude's are known for their gulping of oil this one is way to excessive to be normal. I'm refilling it from the lower hole on the stick to the upper hole every week and 1/2 . Plus every time VTEC engages a cloud of blue smoke follows me and stinks up those in my rear view [may be a cool feature, actually].

Bitter sweet experience on day 3.

Woke up at 9 again today, it was a work holiday so both my dad and uncle were off work. This is how the engine looked within 30 minutes.

Parts, Parts and more Parts...

Got my new wheel arches which are going to be placed on top of the old wheel arches and held on by glue.

An hour or two later...

Unfortunately there was damage and scarring inside one of the piston walls

After the fear of thinking I'd need a new block [roughly 2 gran] my uncle told us we could "cheat" and sand it away. Although this wouldn't be 100% it would be very close to. This was the result of an hour of careful sanding.

Turns out I'll need to machine the Flywheel and Head gasket.

In the end, my uncle was able to give us a diagnosis of what's wrong. Firstly, I was right about the previous owner, he was a complete idiot. Turns out he neglected to change the oil so there was a lot of gunk and build up. Secondly, the Piston itself overheated during driving and a lack of oil allowed it to scar the walls [I hope I'm repeating everything accurately but I'm not 100% sure].

So I continued to clean the parts in Varsol.

After the diagnosis, we were able to make a shopping list. I've got 75 parts ordered on hondaautomotiveparts.com [3/4 are engine parts, but I've also added other parts to the shopping cart]. The total came out to nearly 1300 USD...which is rougly 1500 CND. That's without border tax and duties. May be a cheap price to pay for a 95% new engine but I was hoping for less than a gran . In addition, I'll be passing by the local Honda dealership over here to get their estimate for all the parts before I actually order. Which ever can deliver at a cheaper fee and quicker will get my money LOL.

Next up for tomorrow, go visit Honda.
Order parts.
Remove surface rust.
Begin prepping the body for paint.

Alright so I just got back from Honda...They're estimating roughly 2300CND. LMAO they're crazy hondaautomotiveparts FTW! Just to give you an idea they were charging 138 CND for each window trim molding. Given it is in USD and doesn't take into account border duties + fees the site still only charges 45 bucks a piece.

Time to get to work on sanding...

Alright its almost 12 hours later and here's what I got done today...

I was home alone until late 6 o'clock. Sanded the rear end, the trunk, engine bay and front bumper support. Sadly, I do not have many before pics because of lack of lighting and ****ty iPhone quality pics. Most of it is going to be after shots. Back to the story, unfortunately when my dad got home he said I missed several spots

So he showed me how it was done, I guess.

I quickly picked up the left overs with some Varsol, cleaned it up real nice.

We then ripped off the doors..I kinda like the look

The doors seemed to be one of the biggest victims of Canadian rust. Here's a sad sight.

This door was pretty bad, even compared to the other. I grinded it and ripped a hole through the metal. Luckily, it seems fixable but the rust has done pretty bad damage. If anyone has had this problem before let me know what's the best way to fix it, currently where thinking of using regular filler.

Another productive day it seemed. The moral of the day...never walk around a car carelessly lmao

Carelessness

New Update:

Today we ripped off the fenders and did some body work as well as rust repair.

I also received my new fender and put it on. I must say the small fender bender gave it a completely different look. When I put the new fender on, I once again remembered that the lude's lines are some of the sexiest on a car of this price. I'll have pics of the fender soon.

Cont'd the work on the door, it was honestly in terrible condition and as you can see here my dad's trying to bring it back from the dead so I don't have to drop another gran on doors...

At the same time where sanding it to get rid of the dents from idiots who don't know how to open doors in school and mall parking lots and getting them ready for paint.

Meanwhile, I drifted off and continued to clean up some parts.
Stock it was black. When I got it I made it red but I was kind of embarassed with that color because nothing on my car was red and well it felt like it just didn't go and was attempting to be a race car when it really wasnt...dare I say rice? So now it's going to be blue seeing how Nordic Mist has a hint of blue and I'm going to top it off with blue spark plug wires and aem intake.

I also cleaned up the hood, got rid of the rust and got it ready for paint.

I also got a small present to open. Brand new clutch kit and the flywheel was also machined . I was pretty lucky because I never felt the clutch slip and yet when we opened it up saw it was in bad condition so it was perfect timing.

Again I apologize for the cellphone pics..it's just not practical getting my dad's camera to take pictures with my hands dirty :P.

What do you mean? Sand + Paint? If so there are many people on this forum and others that have already done it. You can find a DIY on the board I'm almost 100% sure.

New Update:

Hi Guys back for another small update.

While I was at work today, my brother and father where hard at work on my car so I'm very lucky they're so helpful and as eager as I am to put it back in the street.

Firstly, the new fender was both sanded and fitted onto the car...looks nice.

Secondly, both the doors and trunk where fixed. Rust has been removed and they have been repainted.

Trunk

And here's the huge difference. This is how the doors looked before:

And After:

That took about 2 nights worth (4 hours) of sanding + filling + burning + sanding + filling to get to that point.

The rear has also been repainted. Rust has been removed.

Finally I got another small present today. This came back looking new after being machined.

*You can scroll up if your interested to see how it used to look.

That's it for today, in the near future we will be putting the doors back on and getting the entire car ready for paint. If we stay on schedule which we seem to be doing fairly well to date, the engine will be rebuilt on the weekend. I can't wait to get her back...getting bored of driving my grandfathers caravan
