While I am a former owner of a 5th gen (1997 base model, 5 spd), I signed up for this forum to help me with my current project. Little FYI, I was going thru an intersection and a woman (go figure...JK LADIES!!!) decided to bust a U-turn. I T-boned her at 50 with no reaction time for brakes. Ripped both wheels off the right side of my car from the impact in the curb and the engine was toast. After the initial impact I actually spun her (full size SUV) and she smashed the back end of my car as well. Funny thing is, the tow truck driver decided to take me to the military base after the tow (ex wife wouldn't answer the damn phone to come get me!!!), but got stuck on the curbing trying to bust a U-turn himself. My car was on display all day and everyone I worked with thought I was a drunk driver "don't be this guy" ad. lol. Took a full day to get his truck removed from the front gate.
ANYWAYS! Currently, I am building a K-1 Attack and have opted for the H22a engine. I started this project a few years ago but military deployments and post deployment nasty business has delayed this project much longer then anticipated. BUT!!! Good news, I am back home and am gathering my resources to start building the car.
What brings me to this forum you might ask? I currently have in my possession a H22a engine and assortment of goodies that I will come to share with this community in hopes that I might be able to get some good information and recommendations to my setup. My H22 had been swapped into a 1992 Honda Accord with quite a bit of NA goodies including skunk 2 cams, retainers, springs, adj cam gears and intake manifold. It also sported DC headers, full exhaust, Hondata and a few other goodies. I sold most of the aftermarket parts a while back to another Attack builder who was opting for a NA setup; however, I am a big fan of FI and have chosen a diff path.
I have a few pictures of the car and our workspace for the time being and the build will start in about a month or so. Right now we are doing a lot of research before construction so we can hit the ground running.
Our goal:
A bulletproof engine putting 350-400 whp. Our main focus is to build and tune this engine correctly the FIRST time since the car is fully disassembled. SO before about not needing this or that and we CAN do without it, consider that money is not our concern, but reliability is. We would rather spend a little extra money on parts and work during the build, then risk severe engine problems down the road and having to rebuild. Aside from that, I appreciate EVERYONE's input VERY much. I also greatly value first hand knowledge when advice is given.
Our current plan is as follows:
First, the block has been fully disassembled and crated for shipment to goldeneagle. The plan is to go for +3mm overbore sleeves with arias 9:1 pistons and Eagle H-beam rods. It was only 50 dollars more to o-ring the deck so we opted for that small upgrade as well. We also get the full list of machine work and standard labor that is attached to the full engine blueprinting service.
Once returned, assembly of the engine will begin. I will be browsing the forums a bit and using the search option for Head options. Since I currently have no valvetrain (I sold the skunk 2 NA setup about 2 years ago) I will need to purchase cams, valves, springs, retainers, valve locks...you get the point. At this point the only item we have for the head is the actual head itself and the studs that will more than likely be replaced. We also have a Golden Eagle Intake Manifold, Vacuum Manifold and are opting for a skunk 2 Throttle Body with matching ID to the Intake Manifold ID. Recommendations for the actual valvetrain is very much welcome.
Now onto the fun stuff, for our turbo setup we opted for the Turbonetics T3/T4 hybrid series. I have a T3 (.63 A/R)/T04E-60. We plan on using the Lovefab Mini Me EQ exhaust manifold. Since the car is a dedicated roadster, we opted to drop the A/C (which is good considering it is incompatible with that manifold). Also, since we are using a Euro Spec S2k steering rack we were able to drop the PS pump, fluid and all lines (etc.) but retain assisted steering for creature comfort. We have not purchased a wastegate yet, but are currently shopping (on the list of items I was hoping to find first hand feedback on). ATM, we can't purchase any intercooler as we are not sure how we want to pipe it. There are 2 side vents at the rear of the car (btw its a rear engine rear wheel drive) but size is very limited and we intend to use one of the side vents for the compressor intake charge air filter. Originally we planned on V mounting the IC at the front of the car with the radiator, but we are a bit concerned with lag as the charge will have to travel up the tunnel of the car to the front, through the IC, then back to the rear of the car. Basically, this will all be done custom after the engine is dropped in.
For fuel we are using AEM rail, filter and FPR. We have yet to decide on a fuel pump as we are contemplating using a fuel cell versus the supplied tank. Using the fuel injector formula we came up with 918.75 cc's min with a .7 BSFC at 80% duty cycle. So it is obvious we are shooting for 1000CC injectors but as for the brand, we are again browsing.
For electronics we opted for the AEM EMS V2. Nuff said. Also went with the MSD 6A. Nothing fancy with the MSD as the AEM unit can almost control the weather outside. ON a side note, has anyone used this system? I am VERY interested in the traction control system and how well it works. IS it good enough to be abel to rely solely on it and drop a LSD purchase?
As for Tranny, we are totally stock at the moment. Plans are to add LSD (depending on AEM EMS feedback), lightweight flywheel and a nice clutch. Again, i will be browsing the forum for recommendations on these items. We also need beefier halfshafts but in order to bolt up without modification, we have to use Honda Accord axles (lame).
Well that about covers it. Suspension, Brakes, interior, exterior and all that other stuff is really totally off topic and out of the realm of this forum's topic. I greatly appreciate any help that you guys can give me and I look forward to sharing some build pictures and power numbers when we get it running. I am hoping to have the car running ready for tuning by March 2011. I know that sounds far away, but until then I should have a lot of badass pictures to share. For now, here is our shop minus our machining equipment (our mill and lathe are still in storage). I took these with my blackberry and they SUCK, but I will update them soon.
BTW, I am an avid sportbike fan and am really big into road racing so if you see lots of bike stuff, that is why. I would dedicate more time to the car if I could but we have a monthly budget that we cannot exceed and I have to try to stay competitive on the bike at the same time.
Anyone in NE Florida interested in hitting up some tracks and laying down some rubber sometime let me know! I will be out at Jennings Gran Prix this weekend. Later all!
SO! A lot has gone down recently with the build. My team acquired another donor car to transfer some of the minor components over (and there has been some progress in basic construction) but we have switched our direction entirely.
Originally I had signed up to this forum in the hopes of finding information for building up the H22 we have sitting in our garage; however, we have decided to use a K24 block with K20A2 head mated up with the TSX 6 speed manual tranny in its place. We wanted to go a little different then the original build design to set it apart just that much more, and we wanted to use a newer engine platform. There were also a few other perks that really stood out on the K-series engines that we felt would greatly increase the drivability of the car ^ speed tranny, flipped engine design, construction and technology). I in no way dislike the H22, but with the technology advancements from the H to the K and the fact that this will be a new car, we want to ensure we are using current technology and engineering as much as possible.
Once I am able to get the build site up and running, I will come back and post a link in here so those who still wish to follow it will be able to do so. I will also on occasion drop in just to let you guys know of any major updates. Thanks!
I will still frequent this site if any members want me to but I understand with my move to the K-seires and this being a prelude community that this project doesn't exactly fit anymore. Well, to those that wish to follow this build...enjoy!
Wow, guy was so gun hoe and then what? He shelved it after 1 month (K-1 Attack Build). So typical...
Just because I do not make updates on the web site does not mean the project is dead. We managed to get the engine fitted up but I halted progress to work another project (below) and then funding ran a little low for this project as I have a few other things going on as well.
Next time when you decide you want to shoot off at the mouth, maybe you should start by asking what is up instead of assuming. Typical little punk on the internet with intake and exhaust thinking his **** is hot.
FTR, its gung ho you moron.
If you would like to see one of the projects we finished during the kit car build, it is here:
I will post back here when I have time to update the web site with photos and info on the kit car for those who are interested. Sorry for the delay folks.

That's cool. Most would have assumed after over a year of no updates on this board or your site that it was dead, but glad to hear it isn't.

Wait what? Shooting my mouth off? This IS a typical build post, read our forums! How many times is there a post about someone saying they're rebuilding there engine within the next few weeks, or they're planning a turbo build, or whatever, then they don't go through with it. After over a year without an update, I think that was a reasonable assumption to make. BTW, my I/H/E owns and I am the biggest badass in my suburb!!!
