My 1993 Prelude SR-V "Project Red" - Honda Prelude Forum

Hi everyone

New member here..Well, I actually signed up on this forum back in '03 after I got my first car ('89 Prelude 2.0Si) in '02, but I was just a lurker back then! I sold that car, bought a 1990 Honda Accord , built it for 7 years before I decided to build something new last year and parted it out..I then got a '95 Accord Coupe last summer for my new project as the '90 Accord was being parted out

Both cars have/had a Prelude H22A motor in it, so the Preludes have always been close to the heart!

On my birthday last November (Before the new project even got started), I found a local deal that I just could not pass up! Someone local was selling a complete running H22A4 motor for $800. The catch: It's still in a car. If you want the motor, come grab the car! So I went to check it out, and there it was: a red '93 Prelude SR-V..Absolutely NO rust anywhere on the car! The owner gave up on the car because 1) He couldn't get it started, and 2) He said the clutch line is "seized". This is what the car looked like when I went to check it out..(In the background is my '95 Accord Coupe, the project that never started

The car had been sitting there for a good 6 months, untouched. But it's in a decent shape, and it's RED! I've always wanted a red car

So I offered him $500 for me to take it off his hands and tow it home. Long story short, everything was a done deal, and I got it home to my driveway.

First thing I did: Gave the car a GOOD 2hr wash!

I then took apart the main relay, re-soldered everything, put it back together, plugged it in, turn the ignition and the car fired up

a few days later, I fixed the "seized" clutch line with nothing but vise grips and a proper 12mm wrench, got a brand new Nissin Clutch MC and slave cylinder, put in some Elf Dot 5.1 brake fluid, bled the clutch line properly, and the car was driveable!

My plan for this car is simple: Major weight reduction (which means very minimal interior), refreshed suspension and upgraded brakes (Which includes 5-lug conversion), mildly built H22A with quality bolt-ons, throw in a few rare JDM parts on the car, and it's good to go!

My goal is to run this car in a local track this summer..Footwork, exterior and interior will be taken care of before this summer starts, and I will build my spare H22 for this car next year.

So here's a quick pic I took when my Value Sports sideskirts arrived a few weeks ago..

Spent a few hours on the car over one weekend, and here's how far I've gotten so far..

Before (Full, gross and moldy interior due to the car been sitting for a good 6-7months before I bought it :? )

Saturday...

Got the front seats out, as well as the rear panels, and discovered how gross the interior is! lol..I don't think the previous owner(s) ever cleaned this car's interior, to be honest..A lot of mold on the carpet pieces, and under the back seat as well..But on the bright side, I found a good $10 worth of change under the front seats!

Also found out that this car had an alarm system at one time, and whoever installed the alarm decided to stuff the alarm brain underneath the center console (literally), along with its gazillion wires!

Officially the most ghetto alarm install I've ever seen!

Rear seat belts are permanently off, and I'm very surprised to see that ABS unit mounted behind the passenger seat!

I MIGHT reinstall the rear side panels and C-Pillar cover, as well as the rear deck cover, since they don't weigh very much, and they will also hide the ABS unit and the sunroof drain hoses..Still not 100% sure though...My motto for this project is: I don't reinstall anything that has been taken off of this car!

Well, I was never planning on keeping the carpet anyway..But now that the gruesome image of the car's interior was constantly haunting me in my sleep on Saturday night, I was determined to rip that carpet out! I only got a few hours today, so this is how far I've gotten..

On the second pic you will see more of the "professional" alarm install that was probably done by the previous owner

BUT! on the bright side, I couldn't find a single spot of rust on the interior! Everything seems to be intact, just very VERY dirty, and minimal mold left!

Next up: Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum, wipe, clean, wipe, vacuum, and then bringing in some dry ice to get all the sound deadening materials off this chassis!

Hopefully this step will shave off a good amount of weight off the car..Oh and I will be relocating the battery to the trunk as well! I have the wires ready to go, just need to find a way to properly mount my Optima Red Top in the trunk, and I'll be good to go!

I haven't done too much work on this project the past week or two..When I did have some time to work on the car, the weather was just too crappy..And when the weather is nice, I always have other things to do

BUT! I did manage to work on my 5-lug conversion parts that I acquired a while ago! I picked them up sometime last month for $100, a complete front & rear BB6 setup. However, everything was still bolted on together..

Front knuckles (With drive axles and axle nuts still attached and torqued properly :roll: )

After some hammering and disassembling..

Rear BB6 5-lug setup (Complete with trailing arms, OEM rear sway bar, etc. etc.)

Halfway through the dis-assembly process..

Completely disassembled..

Complete BB6 front and rear knuckles with 5x114.3 bolt pattern..

Some parts to be installed on these components:

Front:
- New OEM lower ball joints
- New OEM wheel bearings
- New 11.2" slotted rotors
- ARP Extended Studs
- SPC Adjustable Ball-Joint Type Camber kit
- Spoon Twinblock calipers (If budget allows for me to acquire these this year)
- New Drive Axles (Driver's side & Passenger's side)

Rear:
- New OEM lower ball joints
- NEW OEM wheel bearings
- New 10.2" slotted rotors
- ARP Extended Studs
- SPC Adjustable Ball-Joint Type Camber kit

Wayyy more parts to list, I just don't remember them all at the moment haha..OH! I've also found out that Endless/Zeal has their line of "Super Function" coilovers that would fit on BB1-BB8 chassis! I am SO VERY excited!

My only problem is the fact that they literally cost 400% more than my BC Racing coilovers! lol so I can't say I am getting them 100% this year..It will depend on how my budget is by the end of Spring!

And yes, the wheel in the background will be the temp wheels for this project, just so I can have an idea on what 16x7" +50 wheels paired with 215/45R16 RE-01R tires will look like in terms of stance! I'm sure you know what these wheels are! '98-spec JDM DC2-R OEM wheels:

I've always wanted these wheels, and I'm glad that I finally got my hands on a set of these! They weigh next to nothing, even with these heavy RE-01R tires mounted on them!

Anyway, that is all the update I have for now. I've done a bit more work on the interior, will post pics of those later! Stay tuned guys

A bundle I received on Friday..

My fogs arrived! Haha this is just my JDM whore side acting up..But it was a good deal, so I couldn't pass it up..It's one of my "JDM-parts-to-buy" for this project, so on with it..

Upon inspection today, I stumbled upon this..

Yes that is the ECU pinouts, and yes a few of the wires have been cut, spliced, and reconnected poorly

I suspect that the previous owner have ran some sort of ECU tuning device when he had this car..Some wires that have been tampered with:
- A4: VTEC Solenoid
- A21: Ignition Control Module
- A25: Power Source
- A26: Logic Ground
- D6: VTEC Pressure Switch
- D11: TPS
- D14: Primary Heated O2
- D17: MAP

Anyway, I do plan on fixing all the tampered wires before splicing them properly if I do decide to run wideband O2 and a few other things this year..Worse comes to worst, I do have some spare ECU plugs off my CB!

I also had time to finally clean the interior today, so I vacuumed, vacuumed and wiped, and got the interior to be somewhat cleaner..

The plastic covers on the doors WILL be fixed before the door panels go back on!

I pulled out the shifter assembly, will clean it, repaint shifter base and install my short shifter once it arrives! Anyway, interior is as clean as it gets for now..As for the moldy and dirty sound deadening material, if all goes as planned tomorrow, I will be getting some 30lbs of dry ice and get rid of all the sound deadening material once and for all! I'm actually very excited about this! lol...I think it's the curiosity of how much all the sound deadening material weighs..Anyway, if all goes well tomorrow, I will keep you guys updated!

And for those who think I am crazy for building a gutted out car, this is the one car that inspired me to build a "street/track" car to begin with!

Amazing car...Drives like no other Ferraris I've driven so far! Definitely my favourite Ferrari, after the F40..Raw, loud, obnoxious, stiff, light chassis with gutted out interior straight from the factory, and lots and lots of carbon fiber pieces all over the car. I love it! I'm sure my project car will have much less CF pieces than this car haha but the concept is similar!

Anyway, there's that..I hope I can get all the sound deadening materials off by tomorrow..More updates soon! Thanks for looking guys

As promised, some dry ice action!! Bought 35lbs of dry ice over the weekend, and got to work right away before my $40 vaporized...Literally!

I thought this dry ice thing was amazing..Less than a minute on top of the sound deadening material, and the tar literally froze, cracked, and detached itself from the chassis!

That's all the update for now guys..Just had fun with some dry ice over the weekend

I got to clean almost all the areas, except the floor underneath the dashboard, both driver's and passenger's side, as it was getting dark. Once everything is clean and good to go, I'll be painting it the same Milano Red as the rest of the chassis, throw in a set of OEM floormats, and good to go!

Overall, the bag where I collected all the sound deadening material pieces ended up being heavier than the 35lbs of dry ice! Definitely heavier than the OEM spare tire..I don't have a scale big enough to weigh the bag, but I know it's definitely heavier than the 35lbs bag of dry ice, so I think it's safe to say I shaved 40lbs off the chassis by doing this process...Not too too bad, every bit counts!

So my Chargespeed Front Lip finally arrived

Please ignore the misaligned headlight, etc..Everything is a little loose and not mounted properly..They will be fixed at the bodyshop once the footwork is done

Test-fitting the Chargespeed front lip + Value Sports side skirts...

These things are a LOT bigger than I thought!

Still undecided on rear lip as of now..But the important thing is that the front lip and the side skirts somewhat flows together..The front lip doesn't sit higher than the sideskirts, which is a very good thing! That has always been one of my pet peeves

Moving on! Cleaned up the interior some more, and sprayed a first coat of paint on the bare metal where the sound deadening material used to be!

I'll be finishing up the interior floor tomorrow (Another coat of paint or two), and after that's done, I'll throw the OEM floormats on, and the process will be completed

After that comes battery relocation, and I still have to fix the messy ECU pin-out wiring!

Slowly but surely! I copped a Forbidden Short Shifter and a set of AEM Pullies off a local Prelude guys last week as well..The Parts Collection continues!

Thanks guys! To be honest, I haven't been able to do much the past 2 weeks, with the crap weather we've been getting and all...But here's an update that I have so far!

First things first, did a final coat on the interior, and everything is good to go..

Secondly, the ECU wiring plugs...I took a picture a while ago to show you guys how the previous owner pretty much hacked up the wiring harness to the ECU..I'm guessing he was running some sort of piggyback management, perhaps a VTEC Controller or something..Who knows! Anyway, I've been meaning to fix it, but I had a problem of not being able to figure out how to successfully pull the pins out of the ECU plugs in order to do this properly!

A few days ago, I FINALLY figured out how to do it properly, and so I decided it's time to fix the mess on the wiring harness!

Before..

OBD1 ECU wiring plugs off my CB7 (RIP), with pins successfully pulled out of the plugs!

No messing around..Doing everything properly! Hacked up wire was cut, and then new wire off the CB7 ECU plugs was attached...Soldered..

And shrink-wrapped..

Of course I'm not going to show that to all the wires that I had to fix LOL but you guys get the idea!

ECU re-mounted, everything back together..Some things are better left looking like factory!

Quick question...Does anyone have any idea what that small black box beside the ECU could be? I haven't done my research on it yet, I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea!

After ECU wiring plugs have been tackled, I moved on to the engine bay area, specifically the MAP sensor..From the very first day I got this car, I've always been a bit annoyed of how messy the MAP sensor assembly is on this car!

As you can see, I do have an OBD2 throttle body, with an OBD2 MAP sensor attached on top of it! So I figured I'd re-wire the harness in order to accept the OBD2 MAP sensor

After..

While I was at it, and messing around with vacuum lines, I decided to take out the evap canister as well. I've never really understood what these things do to begin with..I know it's for aircare/smog purposes, but is it bad if you run your car without it? Well anyway, I took it out, curious if the car would run fine without it. So far, car seems to be running normal..But if anyone thinks removing the evap canister is a bad idea, then by all means, please chime in!

After OBD1 MAP sensor and evap canister delete..

That's really all the update that I have for now guys..I've also found out that my A/C system is lacking pressure, and will need to be recharged..Tomorrow, if I have time, I will be checking all the A/C lines to make sure nothing is leaking. If everything looks good, I will recharge the A/C and call it a day..If I do find leaks, etc etc., I will be removing the A/C system off the car and shave another 50lbs or so off this chassis...I want to keep the A/C though..I won't remove it unless I have no other choice!
