Taped off red part, spray tinted lower part.. you can buy spray tint from most local custom places, even v8 places should have it. Just spray it a few times until it is dark enough for you. A can costs about 10-15 bucks, and will do about 4-5 sets of full taillights.

You do have a point...I'm always afraid that some poor soul would tip over his VW one day (it's happened at some autocrosses around the country before).

a friend of mine that is driving that green integra up there has a vw. He retired it. Had it up on 2 wheels last year at autocross. Said that was it, scared him too much that he couldn't race it anymore.

Yea, it just isn't super bright anymore, but still highly visible.
