an Alternative Foglight Loation (56k nooo)

Warning --- Lots lots and lots of pictures coming up!

Ok - I'm sure many of you know about the "bumper light -to- foglight conversion" where we can convert our botton turn signals to constantly stay on - thus, turning them into foglights.

I did this back in the days with my Accord.
At first, I used regular turn-signal bulbs and notice the light output was useless.

I then installed high beam bulbs into the bumper lights. YES, highbeam bulbs! And they were bright as hell.
Unfortunately, the beam pattern was horrible and blinded incoming traffic. The only use I got out of them was spotting potholes in advance.

Here are pics of my old RIP Accord

I decided to the do the same with the Prelude but improve the idea.

My plan was to install some real driving lights inside the turn signals. That way I can be sure that the beam pattern will be correct.

I bought some CATZ fogs off ebay.
YES, I know they are bling bling gold, but no one will see the color where I'm installing them.

To make a long story short, the winter season came and I never got the chance to install them where I wanted to.
So, I temporarily placed them in the center grill. I made some custom brakets and hung them as far back as I could to "hide" them when the lights were off. If you are standing in front of the car, you can't see them unless you get down on your knees.
The lights were so far back that the back of the lights almost hit the radiator.

I guess you could say I mounted them in the traditional location with a twist.

When the winter storms ended, it gave me a chance to install the lights where I wanted them to....which was in the turn signal location.

To keep the stock clean look, I decided to place the CATZ lights BEHIND the turn signals.

Firstly:
I cut out the turn signals, just large enough for the CATZ lights to peak through.

Secondly:
After careful measurements, I mounted the CATZ lights onto the car. It was a little tricky, but nothing that couldn't be done with a few trail and errors.

DONE:

Now I have the "bumper light conversion" but was able to preserve the correct beam pattern of driving lights.
Yes, the clear plastic lens of the bumper lights has changed the beam pattern, but not by much.
To keep things legal, my front turn signals have been relocated to the center grill. They have been stealthly tinted.

Here are the end results. What do you think?

I think you just made your JDM fogs even MORE useless

But that's a pretty good idea. Very original

However... just like Qveon... i'm really interested in seeing how you mounted your turn signals and how it looks when it's blinking.

The CATZ are wired to come on with my parking lights.

But you're right - JDM fogs product poor light output.
Despite that, I like them too much to remove.
They finish the car off so well. They should have never produce the US version and just brought the JDM version as a US dealer option.

Those Catz look like they give pretty good light output. Helps for potholes. How much you get em for? I might just put them in the grill, just like how you had them originally.

I did something similar to this... but I just added a relay to my inner turnsignals (like mentioned in the first post). They blink with the parking lights off or on & stay on when I hit the lights (but the also blink.... damnit you get what I'm sying haha). They blink simultaneously with the outer turnsignals instead of alternating, which I think looks better. Granted, they're not as bright as fogs.. but non the less, as you can see, still pretty bright.

Back when I had my aftermarket clear turnsignals... the light melted the housing alil.... but now that I have these OEM ones.... they are more resistant to heat... so they don't melt at all.

How does the color of the light from the Catz fogs compare to the color of the JDM fogs?

Yes JDMugenBB1 - that is the similar mod that I had with the Accord.
Except, I re-enforced the housing with aluminum plates to protect it from the HOT highbeam blubs.
Light output is good, but is kinda scattered.

I don't have a picture of the JDM fogs on with the CATZ. I guess I got really excited about the installation and forgot to take a picture of both of them on.
I'll try to get one this weekend and post it up.

My JDM fogs are stock. I don't have any special bulb or IS-mod yellow covers.
So, the light output is a different color.

**Day177017 ** - The CATZ lights are good. Make sure you get Driving Lights and not Fog Lights to get the best beam pattern.
However, honestly, I would go for PIAA driving lights.
I bought some $120 PIAA lights and they are FAR better than the CATZ.
I donated them to my father to help him see at night.

huh... I never thought about putting brighter bulbs in there. The light disbursement is pretty straight forward... they light up the road in front of me just enough to see the pot holes in time... but it's not blinding to others. I hope to get some amber fogs pretty soon... so I think I'll just stick it out with what I got until then. The only prob I do have is Hyper blinking... but I think it's because I getting some of the power from the outer signals... so I think I'm ganna run them to the corner lights instead. I'm also about to buy some JDM amber sidemarkers.. so I gotta figure out how to wire those to ONLY blink... like they're suppose to.

Nice mod by the way!

pretty cool. would be cool if you could still use part of the original turn signal housing for the turn signals.
