1999 Bone Stock Base Prelude =)

EDIT: Finally decided to give this a revision... the original post is at the bottom, for archival purposes...

This is more a thread for me (and others) to keep track of the progress of my daily driver.

It is a USDM 1999 Honda Prelude CP. (Originally Automatic)
Mods are as follows:
M2Y4 Transmission, with no 5th gear left.
Bone stock block and head. (don't ask)
AEM CAI w/Bypass Valve
DC Sports Headers (beat to piss)
Punched out CAT
Frankenstein'd 1.5-stage direct-port Nitrous Kit (75 poor dispersal shot, and 125 even shot) (not properly tuned: my datalogs while juicing the bottle look like a really scary rollercoaster, that flirts with 16:1 AFR) (NOTE: If you ever drive my car; never turn the fog lights on, while the nitrous system is pressurized. It causes soiled undergarments, at around 3200rpm.)
Custom 2.25" SS Cat-back; to a GReddy can
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Blockoff
Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) Coolant Bypass
Fast Idle Thermal Valve (FITV) Blockoff and Bypass
PCV Breather (intake side)
Husky Oil Catch Can; with a line to the oil pan... I swear I plan on adding a cool-down circuit and a solenoid to this eventually
Auto-Manual Swap (M2Y4)
Honda P72, with a Hondata s300
Perm. Installed 8" Touchscreen LCD above center vents (I like hondata's display)
AEM Wideband UEGO and Autometer A/F Meters, Mounted in a Guage Pod (Replaced the stock O2 with the AEM's Bosch Sensor; the Autometer watches the SHO2S now.. not really sure why... didn't wanna leave a hole there, as my oil guage went with my built engine)
Full Sony XPLOD Sound: MEX-BT3700U CD/MP3 Deck; 5.25" Doors; (Wal-mart Tweeters); 6x9 Rears, Pre-fabbed Autozone box with 2 10's; 1000w pushing the subs; 600w pushing the rest
Accord Pocket, Under the radio.
600w Power Inverter installed in the plastic tray in the back
Leage Rims
4x Kumho AST 215x45xZR17's
Authentic Drilled and slotted Brembo front rotors
Knock-off Drilled and slotted Brembo rear rotors (brembo won't d/s blanks for the rear, poot!)
GReddy front lip
Buddy Club 2 Rear Bumper

Sitting in the TO-DO Pile:
Oil Filter Relocation, and Oil Cooler (Last ditch at keeping the ECT down under juice)
JDM Side Markers (Can't bring myself to dremel out the sides of my fenders)
JDM Accord Side Fog Lights (again, can't bring myself to dremel out the exterior of my car)
Water Pump Seal (Don't ask.)
BC2 Side Skirts (again, requires the use of a dremel... my car is afraid of them)

And now, what you have all been waiting for. The Pictures.

mmmmm... brains....

Wait... where am I supposed to sit?

Gotta have a Bluetooth Head Unit...

Wiring Nightmares...

Meh... I'm sure it will buff out...

You can never have too much Carbon Fiber in useless places!

///////////////// ORIGINAL POST //////////////////

This is more a thread for me (and others) to keep track of the progress of my daily driver.

It is a USDM 1999 Honda Prelude CP.
Real mods are as follows:
Fully built block:
Darton 87mm sleeves
Golden Eagle H-Beam rods
CP 12:1 87mm pistons
No-name drilled Aluminum block brace
Thick Head Gasket (forget specs) to push compression down to 11.5:1
Ported head:
Supertech Valves w/brass Valve Guides
Skunk2 Cam Shafts (Stage 2), Seal, Timing Wheels, Springs, Retainers
AEM CAI w/Bypass Valve
Husky Oil Catch Can
DC Sports Headers (beat to piss)
Punched out CAT
Custom 2.25" SS Cat-back; to a GReddy can
Auto-Manual Swap (M2Y4)
Autometer A/F and Oil Pressure guages mounted in a pillar pod
Full Sony XPLOD Sound: CD/MP3 Deck; 5.25" Doors; (Wal-mart Tweeters); 6x9 Rears, Pre-fabbed Autozone box with 2 10's; 1000w pushing the subs; 600w pushing the rest
600w Power Inverter installed in the plastic tray in the back
4 different styles of Enkei 17"x7" 10-spoke wheels; ironically all weighing about the same
4x Kumho 215x45xZR17's
Direct Port ZEX kit (currently running about a 70-shot)

First, a bit of my life story.

My first car was a 1989 Buick Regal Custom GT. It was 2-tone, black, with a silver lower half. It boasted a turbo'd V6, at 280hp. I originally got this car given to me, when I turned 15; and built it up till I got my license. To make a long story short, I ended up putting a rod through the oil pan, and sold the car for $500; not realizing it's real value

My second car was my parents old car, from when they upgraded. It was a purple 4-door dodge intrepid. As much as I hated the car, that thing lasted years. It's final demise was in 2004, at Fort Bliss, Texas. A guy in a pickup ran a stop sign, and T-boned me in the drivers side.

With the $4000 that I got for the intrepid, I went car shopping, and ended up with a 1999 GMC Yukon with a blown engine, for $800. With $3200 to spare, I picked up a built 350 vortech, that was ran in a monster truck. The transmission took alot of welding and chopping to fit in the yukon, but eventually it all came together. This is when I first really got into street racing.

After the Yukon was put together, and tuned; it's final dyno came out to 428WHP. I'm sure with proper tuning, the engine could push an easy 550WHP, but I'm happy with the 8MPG it gets now (and still gets to this day)

While I was at Fort Bliss, I would routinely race imports, with my black & gold yukon. As heavy as that thing was, it would still take an SRT-4 in a 1/4, without even breaking traction.

As it turned out, anything short of a moderately modified V8 mustang; was money in the bank for me. With 4WD, a touch shy of 500 ft/lbs of torque, and a 100 shot of dry nitrous; I was running mid-low 10's. I'm pretty sure if I changed to slicks, I could have seen single digits; but a yukon with 4 slicks is a dead give away.

After having the Yukon, and raking in a few thousand off of racing ricers in El Paso, I ended up finding my baby at a used car shop. It was a riced 1999 automatic honda prelude. Black, with a Whale fin, mildly built engine, and LOTS of stickers. With a window price of $16,000; I drove away from the dealership with it, for $13000. (about $7k of ricers' money, and $6k of mine)

NOTE: The whale fin didn't even make it home. I stopped at a gas station, unbolted it, and threw it in a dumpster. That thing looked terrible. I later found out that the thing was worth $800... I guess some bum in El Paso is happy.

I drove the Prelude the way it came, for about 200 miles, over the course of a month; before finally fudging a piston ring. I took this as a good opertunity to try to get it as fast as my yukon. I dumped about $7k into the engine, getting every part that sounded cool... Darton 87mm Sleeves, Eagle H-Beam Rods, CP 87mm 12:1 pistons; supertech valvetrain, S2 titanium springs and retainers, RC 350cc injectors... After the assembly and modest tune were complete, it dyno'd at 204WHP. I cried.

While the prelude was in the shop; I actually got beat. By what I thought was a rice extreme. A Toyota celica. After a bit of talking, I found that he had a fully built racing engine in it; and was pushing a 100 shot. Thinking that he was pushing about 120hp, I didn't want to make him feel too bad, so I gave him the jump, and ran a 13s 1/4. He went all out, and ran high a 11s 1/4 =(

The next day, I went out and bought a 2002 Toyota Celica for $7.5k; only to find out that it was going to run me more to have it built than I had paid for the prelude. I kept it parked for a few months before I finally found a ricer that would give me what I paid for it.

After getting the engine built, I let the prelude sit for about 3 months, without touching it other than driving it to the store occasionally, when I didn't wanna get called out, and have to race my yukon. I really didn't change much; other than de-ricing it.. I found a sucker willing to give me OEM bumpers and sideskirts, for the eBay kit that was on it. I jumped allover that. $300 later, at a paint shop in Juarez, mexico, it looked like it was brand new =) They even managed to match the "Pearl" effect of the paint, on the bumpers!

After it was painted; it looked ... boring... I liked the style of the big yellow block letters that said "PRELUDE" across the side, that got scraped off when it was painted; so I had a couple made. The guy that printed em even threw in a set of AEM and DC Sports stickers, what a deal!

In mid-2004, My unit moved to south korea; so I left my baby with the only person I trusted with it- Cliff, of DC Motorsports. I never actually had any work done there; but I would harrass his techs on a daily basis, about how to squeeze more HP out of a H22a4. The plan was to have his team to an Auto-Manual swap, and lots of other work; but hard times, financially, were coming =(

During the first 2-3 months of being in korea, I tried to make plans for the prelude; but everything kept falling through. I eventually ended up just ordering a ZEX Direct Port NOS Kit for it.

I returned from korea, towards the end of 2006; stopped in el paso, picked up both vehicles, and made a run for michigan (home sweet home!). I used a U-haul car dolly, and averaged 4-5MPG from El Paso, TX to Saginaw, MI. Needless to say, I was flat broke before I made it out of texas.

I ended up stopping in Dallas, found a few ricers, but nobody willing to race for $. Ended up pawning off the sound system from my yukon to get home... That was prolly the most painfull $800 I ever got; considering that it cost me nearly $3k. But in the long run, it got me home.

Once I pulled in the driveway in Michigan; I dropped the prelude off of the car dolly; dropped off the trailer; and backed my yukon in, infront of the prelude. CLUNK! I ended up putting a square imprint in the front bumper, that stayed there for a few years.

While I was in michigan, Being nearly flat broke; I adjusted my gameplan. I left the yukon parked at my mom's house; and took my prelude to my next duty station, Fort Bragg, NC. In my mind, the yukon was dead to me. It's gas milage nearly broke me. Plus, with no radio, it was not nearly as fun to drive any more. It still sits there, to this day.

Before I left; I spent a couple of days putting in the Wet Kit; only to find out that the hose that goes from the bottle to the NOS Sol wasn't long enough for where I wanted to put it. I took that as a sign that I prolly shouldn't worry about spraying; considering I couldn't even afford to get the bottle filled at the time; so I left the hose and the bottle at home, with the rest of the kit still installed.

A few months later, at Fort Bragg; I got the urge to play with the Prelude; but being flat broke; and not having my money maker there; I stuck to cheap/free mods. I did alot of custom wiring; pulled the IM off half a dozen times, and filed different parts down, hoping for better air flow. Some things worked; some things worked out well, some didn't.

I ended up making some friends that were in a car club that owned a dyno, so I got some free pulls. I used that to do some fine tuning; and cranked her up to 233WHP, while still running moderately rich through the whole powerband. Now, I was "tuning" with an APEXi VAFC, so mind you, That number would likely go up dramatically, with a proper tune. Some of the power came from the "custom" port matching I did on the intake manifold, some came from playing with the CAI (cutting out chunks of plastic, so the filter actually gets air, etc); but most of it came from the engine actually being broken in.

It all came to a pause, in June, 2007. I was minding my own bussiness; pulling the radio mount out with the car running; when I popped the transmission in drive by mistake; and rear-ended a parked camry. It bent my hood; cracked a headlight; and cost me a few thousand to pay for the damage to the camry. After this, I took a long break.

In January, 2008; my unit deployed to IRAQ; and again, I left my baby in storage. But this time I meant bussiness.

I had never really driven a stick before; other than a celica that I owned for a whooping 2 months back in texas; but I was tired of driving an automatic, and needed a change. I bought a wrecked stock manual prelude, off of a user here, and had it shipped to michigan. When I took mid-tour leave a few weeks back, I got around to doing the auto-manual swap; and it turned out wonderfully.

Now; as I'm back in IRAQ for another 6 months, I have purchased several items to add to the prelude, to get it on the same level as my yukon. There are still several things that I need to purchase.

Very inspirational, it made me want to cry, around here when you have a car like that Yukon of yours, those ricers would just pull out a gun because they are jealous they lost a race. So yeah stupid younger generations ruined street racing. Although it says kilakalivietboi, i made this screename for my email and aim like 6 years ago...

One very similar to this, but it had a break light, and blinkers in it:

Retailed for around $500 at the time, and I figured $300 for the paint job.

Mike

For $60, I'll ship you a new Walbro Fuel Pump that's never been used. I didn't know the Jackson Racing Kit would come with one, so I ended up buying one anyway and when I got around to the build, I found that they are both identical (I figured the JRSC one was a knockoff). It's a lower price seeing as how you'll need all the money you can get to finish the build up. If you agree, i've got a paypal address you can send $ to.

Rather than zinc plated rotors you can just paint regular ones. Autozone blanks are pretty popular with the auto-x guys. Also the s300 is more for high end turbo applications. You'd be fine with an s100 or s200.

ummm if you paint regular rotors wouldnt the brake scratch the paint off, unless you disconnect your rear brakes or something

The braking surface gets cleaned off anytime you drive. The hub and outer edges are what rust and turn the color the OP dislikes.

Actually, I would be "fine" with the controller that comes with the jrsc, and my vafc.

I prefer the s300, for it's possibilities.. plus it eliminates alot of wiring, for my Nitrous control; plus the ability to run seperate maps for racing and daily driving.

Also, in reference to the rotors; I was planning on getting painted ones; but most painted ones either flake off, or look too ricey.

Back in town!

Well; I'm back in the US; and I have all of the important bussiness sorted...

Back in November of last year; I bought a JRSC from sr20cars on here; and he stiffed me. (never shipped the JRSC)

Before I came back, I had a company out of NC here "attempt" to install a turbo.. I got the full GReddy kit, w/FMIC off of a guy on HondaMarketPlace for $1100... They failed miserably. As it turns out; they didn't hook up the E-Manage properly, and caused it to lean out at around 6k rpms.. Once I got back, I drove it a bit (about 200 miles), and yanked the Turbo off myself. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done, and spun a bearing, deep in the engine.

Back in June, I grabbed my spare motor from Michigan, and dropped that in, for the time being.

Now days, the Prelude is running a bone stock H22a4, with 130k miles on it (still only 80k on the chassis)

A couple of weeks ago, my passenger door was hit by a giant rock (about 7" from side to side); propelled from an industrial lawn mower... Damages came to $980 ($20 less than my deductable)

Not all is lost tho. I'm still working on the "Looks" of the car- I have JDM SiR Carpet on the way; and I'm picking up an aftermarket rear bumper and side skirts this weekend. I'm having my GReddy front lip sent down from michigan, got a new shift boot in route (mine looks like poo), aswell as a new Head Unit (Sony BT3700U),

I'll be installing the rear bumper, and side skirts this weekend; aswell as the JDM Cornering Lights and JDM Side Market Lights this weekend... already have the JDM Fogs in. If I have time, I'll put the "Go Bottle" back in, and get her charged up, and see if I can pop my spare engine =D

Next week, I'm getting the car painted by a local place (http://www.peachautopaintingnc.com/)... They quoted me $520 for 2 coats of black, and 2 coats of clearcoat, aswell as popping out 95% of the dents and scratches.

Got another local place here that said that they can sew custom leather replacement seat covers (replacements for the existing cloth covers, not covers for them) for $250, with red pleather, and even put some "Prelude" lettering on em, to mimic the JDM ones... They said they prolly won't last more than 3-4 years, but for $250, who cares?

Anyhow... as for recent work completed:
JDM SiR Red Center Console Installed
JDM SiR Red Sun Visors and Map Light (On Hand)
JDM Cup Holder Installed
Honda Carbon Fiber Trim Kit- Radio Bezel and Center Console Installed, Door Handles On Hand
Zinc Plated D/S Brake Rotors Installed
Nitrous System - Installed, then taken out
JDM Side Markers On Hand
JDM Cornering Lights On Hand

Another Day, Another Interior

Today, I finally got the carpet in; so I took her apart and laid the new carpet down:

Following the carpet being laid in place; I re-ran all of my sound system wires, under the center of the carpet; to clean up unsightly bulges near the doors; and got the new radio in:

Lastly, I decided to tackle the wild octopus that was hanging out under my passenger floorboard:

I'm not done with the ECU Wiring yet; but as it sits now; it's got true OBDI wiring; now I just gotta strip the non-OBDI parts, and the A/T wiring harnesses; and tape up the wires =)

Last week; I got around to doing my timing belt/manual tensioner conversion... I can't find my cheap-o digital camera's charger, so I can pull the blasted pics off of it tho =/

Thats all for today...

EDIT:
Now that I look at the pictures closer; I'd like to point out the laptop- Motion Computing LE1700... I'm not usually one for shameless plugs, but here it goes...

It's an older model laptop, but it's a true tablet- no keyboard/mouse,,, everything is done by the pen. It has been a life saver, as a portable helms/smanager/google platform, while I'm doing random stuff to my car.. and for less than $200 on ebay, you can't go wrong!

Fire.

Well, today I made a bit of a boo-boo.

I had a 16 gauge wire, running from IGN1, to the center of the back seat; which I used as a feed for a few things- relay that turns my power inverter on, power source for my laptop, remoted laptop power button thingie, etc.. I didn't have this wire fused; as it was just a temporary solution; until I re-routed the original sound system wire, to take its place...

While I was working on the wiring; it grounded out at the back of the center console, from being pulled against a metal bracket. And, being that the wiring was steel, instead of copper; it turned the entire wire into a poorly placed heating element, once I started the car.

To make a long story; I ended up with a channel burnt, across every wiring harness, every piece of plastic, and every place that the wire touched; grounding out other wires; supplying power to the wrong ones; etc..

So, now, at the end of the day; the PGMFI main relay is melted; abs relay is melted; SRS wiring harness is melted, cruise control box is melted, immobilizer box is melted, passenger side air bag deployed, and the car smells like I had a camp fire in it.

Learning Point: IGN1 is not fused. It is relayed directly off of the battery. Do not tap it, without a fuse!

So, it looks like I finally get to make use of all of the harnesses and parts that I pulled out of the BB8 when I had it =(

Ok... Since the last post; I've spent every waking hour, rewiring everything in the car; and making some improvements in the wiring here and there (added about a dozen 5a fuses; to prevent future re-wirings)

Got it running at about 7:00pm today (yesterday); and started re-installing the MSD 6AL..

Got the MSD 6AL installed; and did a quick compression test before running it:
CYL 1: 210psi
CYL 2: 210psi
CYL 3: 240psi
CYL 4: 210psi

As it turns out, this EUDM engine is a winner... this thing has better compression than my built engine, lol... not sure why CYL 3 is so much higher... I even re-tested cyl2, then tested 3 again... results stayed the same....

Anyhow, after plugging the fuel pump back in, and turning the ignition on, I heard a strange noise from the engine compartment,,, sounded like a power washer spraying.... I ignored it... the car always makes funny noises.

While cranking the engine, I couldn't get it to start to save my life... the AF meter was locked at 10:1... even with the car off... Naturally, I figured there was a problem with the AF meter... I traced the wires down, pulled the guage, pulled both harnesses, and tested it outside of the car- still read 10:1.... I started to think that the wideband sensor had gone out on me; but as a last ditch, I took a whiff of the exhaust... Didn't even have to breath in- there was fuel dripping out of the exhaust.

Long story short- the s300 bugged out on me again... it was holding the injectors high, continuously... After pulling it apart, I found some cold solders; re-soldered them, and it seemed to fix the issue.

I finally got the ECU back in the car at about 2:00am, and it still wouldn't turn over... Being ornery and tired, I put the OEM coil back in, and it fired up immediately... still unsure what gives here; I think I messed up the MSD 6AL while tracing wires for the O2 sensor..... shrug.. I won't need the MSD till I have a sc anyhow; so I'm just gonna leave the stock coil in it for now.
