used JDM h22- reasonable pricing

This guy is selling a JDM h22 pullled out of a 97 prelude. It has 130k. miles on it... What do you guys think is a reasonable offer? i know that's a lot of miles. I would recommend getting something 40k-60k miles on it. But right now (becuase of the financial situation) whatever i can get at a good cheap price... What do you guys think?

p.s. the motor i have- h23a3, the timing belt broke while i was driving it... So I was told 99.9 % my valves are bent... So instead of paying 700-1100 to put new valves, I am looking into a JDM H22 motor.

For an older JDM motor... not much. You can get a motor + trans from hmotorsonline for not too much. I would offer him no more than 1k for motor + trans, maybe $750 for the motor. Keep in mind you can get a pretty clean motor locally for $2k from a local yard.

I'm not sure but I don't think the H23 is an interference motor- Honda does a good job of using valve reliefs that make for non-interference motors. All the VTEC motors I have seen so far are non-interference as long as you are not in VTEC. Not too sure about the H23.

Keep in mind that any JDM or junkyard motor you get will probably need a timing belt and a few seals. The H23 to H22 swap isn't just plug and play, either. Repairing your motor will probably be the cheapest route.

^when my timing belt broke. it bent a few valves, i saw it visably. but i was only revving at 3-4k cruising. i saw an opportunity to upgrade i asked billy if it was a non-interference and he said the h-series was. but it is wierd i bent some valves. its not like i was gunning it.

anyways, there are many local places to get jdm motors. if you don't like that motor you are currently looking at, there are other places than junkyards that have jdm engines. i got mine from an importer in richardson

Thanks for the replies guys!!!! I Really appreciate it... Yea, Dough told me about H-motors... I wanted to get it fixed, the mechanic said it would cost me about $1100. $750 labor + parts. If I can get it fixed under 500 I would get it fixed. I really dont like the motor I have, I wanted more power, that's why I am looking into the JDM H22... Also how can I check if I bent the valves? I was told I have to take off the whole head? Brian, If your buddy will buy the H23 that would be great!! My email addr is: misleadjatt@aol.com

Thanks for the replies guys!!! I appreciate it!

p.s. @ marcucci & petern101

A leak down test will tell you if you have bent valves.

I don't think anyone local is going to have a JDM H22. There isn't anyone that imports them locally that I'm aware of. Keep in mind most JDM H22s are 4Gen H22s, which means they're at least 11 years old. All the rubber seals will likely need to be replaced, and that adds up quickly.

A JDM swap for $750 in labor is dirt cheap. I'm not even sure I'd do it that cheap, although the Prelude Si is much easier to do a JDM swap in than the S model swap that I did a few years ago. The engine came out fantastic, however, and the owner was very, very happy. I think he spent about twice what he wanted to, though (I replaced every single rubber gasket except the valve seals in that engine).

Whatever you do, replacing the timing belt, water pump, balancer belt, distributor cap & rotor, spark plugs, and a good valve adjustment is mandatory. You can't get around that stuff. I'd also do a whole list of other things, but that's me (and those that know me can attest to my perfectionism when it comes to cars).

Good luck, and plan on spending more.
