Is it happeneing all the time? Just under VTEC? All the time exept VTEC? When did this start? Was after you did something to you car?
i really havent done anything different car has normal mods short ram intake, magnaflow exhaust etc stock header tho!......ive noticed this for a while but it wasnt until my buddy was following me from behind and noticed a black puff of smoke when i punched it..... so yeah it is happening under VTEC, hope this clears things up abit.
I was having the black smoke on vtec for a while now, my exhaust is black.. had vibrations at idle, and ****ty starts, i put some fuel injector cleaner, and vibrations are completely gone, the engine sounds meaner and stronger, it pulls through all rpm not like before, vtec actually hits like when i bought the car, just overall better, im happy

im going to try some injector cleaner this weekend see what happens
you are pefectly fine. My buddy's prelude lude did that. He was always cleaning his back bumper. After you get an aftermarket exhaust it flows out easier i guess. You car is prolly running fine. if you are able to rev the car up hi and or hold it a 3000rpm for a while and then let off, and the car does not die you are fine.
Start with Solid's suggestions. I'd also change out the primary O2 sensor if it's been a long time since changing (100k miles or more). If it's a VTEC you should ALWAYS run 92 or better. Don't use fuel injector cleaner every tank- it will damage the O2 and/or cat.
VTEC motors always run rich (when untuned). Soot on the exhaust and bumper is inevitable. Puffs of dark smoke should not be common when punching it- this indicates you are probably running richer than you should, but is probably nothing major.
Start with those items and then post back. Resist the temptation to dump something like Sea Foam or some other cleaner crap in the intake manifold.
^I have had a secondary O2 fail from one use of booster/cleaner. That's good advice on the Seafoam, because wasn't an NTPOG member that killed their engine from misusing it?
