My Bunch o Newbie Questions

I am never going to race on a track, no time to get there.

I just like getting up to 59mph real quick. If I can stay under 60, I won't get any major tickets in town. Anyone know the penalty for using this stuff in AZ?

Is nitrous a stupid option if this is all I want to do?

I have been looking at the Zex dry kit somewhere 50-75, and using their air amplifier. I am pretty sure I garnered from searches that you cannot leave this "on" all the time, because you'll ruin a valve, right?

Without a "purge kit" you'll have pressure against that valve too right? So you NEED a purge kit??

I read some posts where people purge BEFORE a race. Whats up with that?

I have a 92Si automatic. Is automatic a problem? If you are at 0 mi/hour and slam the gas with the N2o armed, are you going to just melt the tires?

I feel like my car revs up a little much before it shifts to 2nd, 3rd etc. Is that going to be even worse with N2o, and start shocking the tranny?

Thanks a ton for any help.

Nitrous is a great option if you want to go fast from time to time, however if you plan on using it a lot I would suggest going FI. Reason being is that you get around 12 15 second runs on a bottle (well, you can get more than 12 runs but once you start getting low the punch isn't all there).

You are correct about leaving the nitrous on all the time, it is bad on your solenoid seals and some nitrous will leak by resulting in an empty bottle given enough time.

A purge kit is used after you first open the bottle up. There will air in the 10 or so foot line and you want to get the nitrous up to the solenoid. It isn't a necessary item, but it prevents any delays from going WOT and for the nitrous to start fogging the intake. You will also want to clear your lines after your turn the bottle off, by either purging or leaving your system armed and going WOT to get all the nitrous out of the feed line. A purge works great for these items, and that is why it is recommended.

Nitrous if fine on an automatic, but you will only want to start spraying while above 2200-2500 rpm. What do you mean by your car revs up before it shifts into second? Does it hit the fuel cut? You don't really want to hit the fuel cut while spraying, since the nitrous will continue to spray and you won't be getting enough gas while you are on the fuel cut (there are a few ways to prevent this though). The shock on the tranny shouldn't impact its life, since it is only temporary power.

Nitrous is for racing. If you just want to make your car get to teh speed limit faster by a header.

alright. Now I am gonna go do some searches on headers and FI to see what that'll do.... Thanks.

As far as the rev up comment... when I have it floored from a stop, it will rev up to about 6k and then it will shift. As it is shifts into 2nd there is a bit of a jerk felt in the car. At least compared to my 2003 Honda Pilot (AT) that shifts so smooth you can't even feel it hardly. I have the same "problem" in my 1995 Corolla, but its even more pronounced there.

Thanks!

It's an 11 year old automatic. Try flushing out the old tranny fluid, but it's probably just getting old.

I dont think spending the amount of money on either nitrous or FI is worth it if all you are doing is goin 0-60. N2O isnt something that is always available to you either, you have to open up the bottle and warm it up when its cold which takes time. I would just get all the boltons if thats all your gonna do. Thanks. That is where I am gonna start.

Seeing the FI is like $3000~, I would probably get an H22 before doing that!

I've got intake/headers/exhaust planned, and I guess I will sit on that for a while.

Thanks,
Swami

Most of all, LEARN more about what you're interested in. You can do all the mods you want to your prelude, but if you do it wrong, then everything will go to hell QUICKLY. Just my .02
