compression check / leak down in Southern California?

i'll say it before many others do...just head to the automotive store and buy a tester and do the tests yourself.

a compression tester yes, but a leakdown test would probably be cheaper to have a shop do since you need the tester as well as an air compressor.

i thought the leakdown test was just dropping a cap or straw full of oil in there and doing the compression test again...

How hard is it to do a compression check your self? Sorry for jacking the thread

nope, you pressurize the cylinder to a certain PSI with a regulator and then see how much pressure the cylinder loses. That will determine the condition of the cylinder and whether it is rings, valves or a head gasket that is bad.

a compression test is quite easy. Just pull the plugs, screw the tester in one cylinder, pull the fuel pump fuse, hold the throttle wide open, crank over for 3 seconds or so and check the pressure on the guage. Then do the same for the other 3 cylinders.
