Turbo Piston Ring Gap

Hey guys thanks again for all your help. I've been tring to gap my rings and are having problems. The top ring has a gap of .0022 while the JE instructions calls for .0017.

What would you guys suggest? Using what was sent with the piston kit or ordering the next bigger size rings?

What gap is everyone running.

Thanks Shawn

Well since no one answered. I called JE and Nick told me that .0022 top and
.0024 second ring would be fine when running boost.

Anyone have any thoughts...??

Did you get the correct sized rings/pistons to your bore?
EDIT: just a thought, I've never had this problem.

I gave Nick the part number. He said it was correct part # for the h22 87mm pistons.
But I'm not sure if i should trust that large of a gap. I don't want to have to much blow by or it burning oil. And i don't want the ends to butt up under boost either.

I believe I'm measuring right. Insert ring, square with piston about 1-2 inches down, insert feeler gauge. Correct size is one that has a little resistance going in the gap.

^^ That sounds correct. Are you sleeved? You realize you can't run forged pistons in a stock block ...

Yep i do darton sleeves by ERL.

What I have been thinking...is to order the 88mm rings and just gaping them in the middle of their spec sheet and what JE said. Somewhere around .0019 - .0020 for the top and .0021 - .0022 for the bottom. I just wish i could get some feed back from others that are running JE pistons in an H22. So i could compare what others are running.

If your rings are that far off, have you measured the bore? Is the bore 87mm and within spec? I would be surprised if this were just a ring problem. If the bore is off, your clearances will be off, and then you will have problems later.

I sent the pistons to ERL with the sleeve install. Sean said they would do a finish hone to match each piston to each cylinder to get a .0030 clearance.

But i will remeasuring everything tonight just to make sure things are not out of spec. I'll repost later tonight.

I went and checked everything and the bores average out at 3.425 The Piston clearance are .0035 though i was wrong. I also rechecked the ring gaps I got the #1 cylinder to .0020 but the rest a couldn't get closer than .0022-.0023.
