Msd 6 Btm

If I use the MSD 6BTM to manage the timing in relation to boost will I need an AFC to control the a/f ratio?

Which would be the better bet to prevent detonation and how hard is the MSD to configure?

Thanks!!

Re: Msd 6 Btm

timing has more of an effect on detonation than fuel does, but they are related; there may be points at which no amount of retard would cure the detonation, and generally speaking no amount of fuel will compensate for overly advanced timing.

if i had to have only one, i guess i'd want timing control first, since i assume you would have some mechanical way to affect fueling in a gross sense.

you might consider a j&s instead, but i'm not too familiar with the MSD units. others will be able to tell you about it.

The MSD will retard timing per boost no problem. But the problem is that you can't adjust it by trial and error! (Way, way too costly!)
How can you be 100% sure that you apply sufficient retard to prevent any detonation?
How can you predict the effects of temperature, altitude and octane level variations on the tendency to engine knock?

The stock knock sensor setup is not efficient enough to give you a decent warning and no, your ear in not sufficient either.
In fact, you can easily blow your pistons due to detonation without getting any CEL from the ECU or earing any weird noise.

With the J&S, you get the same boost retard, but it will automatically be applied on each cylinder, as required to prevent detonation. I think it's worth the extra money on the already expensive MSD knob retard unit.

I just installed mine recently. It'S easy.
You tap in a few wires at the ECU and you connect in line on the ignition signal wire. Oh, and there's a vacuum line as well.

You can get it on groupbuycenter.com.
