Lost all of my oil, hope she's ok... :(

Well i was on the way to school today and about a mile from the exit my oil light flickered on and off briefly.. I very gently cruised off the exit and drifted to a stop, popped the hood, oil everywhere. Apparently the oil leak that I though were cam seals were actually the front main seal or balance shaft seals that I dreaded it being..

Lost all of my oil in the process.. so basically, do you guys think my rod/main bearings will be ok, never experienced this before, and I know the stock oil pressure sensor doesn't come on until ridiculously low oil pressure, but the good thing was I wasn't doggin it or anything, just cruisin at highway speeds, low load and all..

Do you think my bearings will be alright?

I'm gettin it towed back to my house and looks like my car will be down for another short while, until I have time to fix the POS. Guess I can drop the pan and check the mains/rod bearings?

Any writeups on replacing the front main seal or balance shaft seals?

No way to be sure there was no damage without a full teardown. You could run it and see if you have problems. For the seals, you should pick up a Helm manual.

There's the possibility you lost one or more seals because of improperly set up PCV.

I blew out my balancer shaft seal becuase i didnt have the retainer in it. I blew it out on the way to school, drove 2 miles to school, then 4 miles home, then i noticed the oil trail the whole way. I replaced the belts and seals, and it was fine. Im pretty sure their is a write up, if not i will see what i can do about making one.

Well I had a proper ventilation setup, eliminated PCV valve and had both straight to a catch can and to the ground, was in the process of welding in a slashcut but that didn't get finished obviously..

No excessive blowby I don't think compression is all 190-210 across the board :\

Guess we will see, but thanks for the comment preludestud11, that gives me hope!

I too, think I don't have the piece noted on the TSB, that retainer thing, so that must be in, coupled with more blowby from boost..

I thought the leak was from my cam seals, so I replaced those, apparently NOT ha..

To be honest I think you should be ok , as long as you didnt' run the engine hard when it was really low on oil, nothing should be of harmed. Of course that is not definate, but fix the problem put it back together and I am willing to bet it runs fine and no problems what so ever.

I've spun a rod bearing on my H22A twice now, due to low oil, however on that particular H22A I was going through 1L of oil a week or more. I rebuilt it and it still burned through oil. That block is now going to be sleeved turned into my turbo block

The second time I spun the bearing was when I was on my way back from a roadtrip to vancouver after 10 hours of driving hard through the mountains. Apparently topping off the oil 400km back wasn't enough to keep it from burning it all up and causing my second rod bearing to go.

As long as you haven't driven the car hard or a long period of time at low oil, I see no reason for there to be any damage.

Edit:

Also to add on, you can drop your pan and take a look at the rod and mains but you won't get much info from it, unless you pull it all apart you won't be able to see much. Here are some pics from my 2nd spun bearing, the crankshaft hardly looks touched but it has some minor scratching as is out of round.
