J&S dual monitor question

For the monitor, the installation instructions say that for four wire O2 sensors the negative wire of the a/f meter in the monitor should be tapped into the O2 sensor reference wire rather than running it just to a ground. I know that the positive wire needs to be tapped to the signal wire (D7, white). Which wire is the reference wire? Or should I just run the negative wire to ground?

i think the reference wire they are refering to is the sensor ground wire....if you are looking at the connector from the O2 sensor side and the clip portion is up top, then the wires goes sensor signal (top lefthand corner), sensor ground, heater ground, and heater positive from left to right in a clockwise direction

Thanks, Quaalude. I decided to try running the black to ground (ecu housing) and it works fine.
