Guys, I've been reading a lot about going turbo, and I see a lot of people who blow their motors. I REALLY want to go turbo, and I've been saving to do it, but I drive my car 25,000 miles a year, and I can't really afford to replace the motor any time soon. I need to hear some positive information from some of you guys to pep my spirits back up. Will my motor last more than 50,000 miles (2 years) without a rebuild on 7 lbs. of boost with a tuned Hondata S200b? BTW- I have a 98 Type SH with 115,000 miles on it. Also, if i were to blow the ring lands (did i say that right?) that wouldn't completely mess up my whole motor, would it? Just the pistons, rods, rings, right? Thanks in advance.........
from what i've gathered from years on the board and gathering info from turbo people, and going turbo myself (but its not done yet), is that on stock internals tuning either makes it or breaks it. I wouldnt tell u to use the FMU from a kit, for ex, but if you get a good tuner to do your hondata , most likely you'll be fine. That being said, one day stuff will break, so from the time you buy the kit and all, you should save for a rebuild, even if it may last 50k miles.
to answer the 2nd part of your question, blown ringlands usually results in replacing pistons + honing. All you need to be safe for turbo, internal-wise, is sleeves, pistons, and rods. Other engine components (valvetrain, for ex) won't be harmed from this.

If you really can't afford to replace your motor (Money wise or be without a car) then you should think twice..... It doesn't help if you have over 100k on the motor.. But if you feel ballzy, welcome to the club!
Have a cylinder leakdown test done for the engine. If that checks out good, you should be fine for low boost. Remember that our engines were not designed with turbos and superchargers in mind, so even the best setup and tune carries risk.
well, i'm definitely feelin' ballzy in my heart, but my brain keeps trying to deter me. I think that I will be able to afford pistons, rods, and sleeves by the time anything would go wrong, so i still plan on boosting ASAP. ..........and thanks for the info on what breaks when the ring lands go out. That definitely peps me up a little.
I don't think you've read enough. Yes, people have blown their motors. That does happen. But if you take the proper precautionary measures and don't get stupid about it, you'll be fine.
There are a couple of people with SC's with 20k and even close to 40k on stock block. With turbo, the general consensus is to go between 6-7 psi, but probably not much more.
And as Shark said, go with a compression and leakdown test. That, right away, will tell you whether to follow your head or your ballz.
